Question:
What can you eat when you progress to pureed foods, Isnt that like a liquid diet?
I am now 1 week post op and feel like I am starving. I have been on complete liquids for 1 week and i feel like I am ready for more. Can you eat oatmeal or mashed potatos or is that further down the line? — almcdowell (posted on February 27, 2006)

I was able to do mashed potatoes and oatmeal as long as they were REALLY
thinned down (almost to the point I could suck them through a straw). As
for the oatmeal, you may want to blend the oats to a finer texture before
you make them. You can also do cottage cheese, soups (cream and liquid),
refried beans and cheese, grits, pudding. Just make sure you buzz anything
with chunks through a blender for a few seconds to make it easier to
digest. And CHEW everything! Even if you think you don't need to. VERY

Hi!
I had surgery on 02/06/06. I am on the pureed/mushy phase myself. For me
this is the 3rd & 4th week AFTER surgery. I have suggestions from my
dietician and they are as follows: 1/4 c. small curd low fat cottage
cheese; 1/4 c. oatmeal, made with skim milk (not too sticky); 1/4 c. s/f
pudding made with skim milk; 1 small jar of baby food meat or vegetables
(be careful of added sugars); 1 scrambled egg or 1/4 c. egg substitute; 1/4
c. blenderized vegetable beef soup, clam chowder, etc.; 1/4 c. mashed
banana, unsweetened applesauce; 1/4 c. pureed vegetables (carrots, squash,
peas, cauliflower, etc. Limit mashed potatoes)
Also anything that was on the liquid and full liquid phase. They suggest
eating 5-6 meals/day with 2-3 of those being meal replacements (protein
drinks that are replacements and not supplements).
The biggest suggestion..do not chew anything. I have found that the
Progresso soups have a pretty substantial amount of protein compared to
other soups. I put it in the blender until it is liquid. It looks pretty
gross, but you get over that when you taste it. I hope that helps. I have
some additional information, if you need it...just e-mail me.
Good luck

Hi April I am 4 days Post Op and I am on a full liquid diet. I got
suggestions from friends who used the same dr and surgery as I, they said
to suck on popsickles and try thinned down cream of chicken soup and mashed
potatoes, I did and they make me feel REAL full! I am drinking plenty of
water and a shake called "muscle milk" ,watch your sugar.I am
feeling wonderful and satisfied for now...until i get tired of the same old
same old.LOL! I alternate all of the above every 15 minutes per DR's order.
Email if you have any questions, I a,m kinda new at this too but I am
learning everyday. I worry about eating too much but I haven't vomited any.
Talk to you later~Melissa

I am almost 1 year post op. Go very slowly. Don't rush putting solids back.
You would be surprised the trouble you can get into. You say you are
starving? That kind of hunger may be more head hunger and thrist than true
hunger. Also you may want to evaluate the type of protein you are taking
in. Are you using a protein drink like Nectar or Matrix? Increasing protein
curbs hunger quite a bit. A tool you will need countless times for the rest
of your life- trust me. because eventually those food deamons come back.
For now- let you body recover.
I went back to my bariatric nutritionist 2 weeks after surgery to create a
new food plan. We started with soft foods like cottage cheese, low carb
yogurt, white flaky fish, apple sauce, string cheese. More is coming-
promise.

Hi, just wanted to add my 2 cents. I am on the puree foods right now and I
do a lot of soups. I blend them and add 15 grams of soy protein per serving
to the mix, and a little broth to help liquify it. I have had potato ,
tomato, beef vege, manhattan clam, beans and bacon, chicken noodle so far and
it works so well for me. Blend the whole can and save the rest for another
meal. I also still drink carnation instant breakfast with the 15 grams of
soy blended in. I have also eaten chicken with chicken broth and light
mayo, blended to a pulp-and tuna the same way. I also bought a few baby food
jars of veges that I like. I have lost 34lbs-so far.Just remember all the
food we cannot have right now-we have eaten them so many times before and
just for a few months , we don't need them right now.Nothing taste as good
as thin feels! You can do it! Rachel

April..Check with your doctor. I NEVER did the liquid diet. Even in the
hospital I was given mashed potatoes. I was scared to death that I was
doing something wrong but I never had to puree a thing. I am 3 months out
and 90lbs down. I basically ate baked white fish, mashed potatoes, refried
beans, canned veggies, cream soups, and popcicles the first month. Just
make sure you CHEW CHEW CHEW. Good luck and do what you think is right for
you. Everyone will have a different opinion. Chew and watch your
sugars..no more that 5 to 8 grams per serving!
