Question:
Can I have a 2nd surgery?
I had GB in July of 2002. I weighed in at 304. I am 41. I am 5' 4". I still weigh at this moment 240. I am still considered morbidly obese. Can I have a second surgery or is this out of the question?... And where do I start. Thank you, JG — JoAnne G. (posted on October 21, 2005)

Hi, well, I know with the mini-gastric bypass that I had, yes you can get
more intenstines bypassed. As for the RNY, I'm not sure.

In general, revisions to the RNY and from the RNY to another surgery, such
as the duodenal switch, are possible. Whether a revision is technically
possible for you, and whether a revision is the answer to your problem even
if it is technically possible, are questions no one can answer here.
Revisions raise many issues more complicated than those in first-time
surgeries. Two good sites to get you started are the following Yahoo
groups:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WLSrevisionsupport and
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG/
Good luck.

Yes you could chose another type of WL procedure. The one I had in mind
might suit you well. These are BPD and Roux en y.
But you will definitely need to exercise as that is a key component of ANY
WL surgery. without this, then you will lose a few pounds more and despite
your best efforts to watch what you eat, you will still come to a dead
stop. Combine your nutritional needs at the discretionof your surgeon but
connect them to a good daily walk program, and the weight will start to
fall off much more easily. With BPD, when you get to the disired level of
weight reduction, it will be much easier to maintain and you wont have to
exercise as much. Did you know that even healthy peoiple need to exercisre
daily. Good luck

I never had a GB at all. Last week I had a LapBand surgery and it is
completly adjustable and reversible. Many people inquire about this
weightloss surgery after other surgeries are not working as well as time
goes by. It can be done after other surgeries, is less evasive, and
recovery time is one week for most and then back to work. You should
research it.

I just recently went to Pac. Bariatrics for a conference and sad to say
that they do not do revisions. I do know that Dr. Tanaka is a fabulous
surgeon and would welcome a conversation with you. They are always happy
to talk to patients, even if your surgery was years ago. They welcome the
follow-up. I would suggest that you keep a diary of your food intake
before speaking with him - because that it is the first thing any doctor is
going to address.....How are YOU using your tool? Best of luck!
