IS ANYONE HAVING MOUTH SORES? IS IT THE B12?

I BEGAN THE B=12 BY MOUTH THE FIRST DAY HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL. I BEGAN THE LIQUID CALCIUM THE NEXT DAY. NOW I HAVE SORES IN MY MOUTH MOSTLY ON THE BOTTOM. I TAKE MY B12 BY A SMALL DISOLVING TABLET UNDER MY TOUNGUE. ANYONE HAVE ANYTHING SIMULAR? THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR FEEDBACK    — ALEOINIDAHO (posted on October 8, 2003)

I also had many canker sores my first month post-op. I was not taking B-12 by mouth. I finally narrowed it down to the Fruit20 that I was drinking in gallons. ;0) The first ingredient is citric acid! And I have been drinking a lot of Fruit20 again now at 1 year post-op and in just the past week they've come back with a vengeance. So I'm back to some alternate "water" sources for awhile again.

I am 6 weeks post op and just went through the tongue sores. They were just aweful!!!! I never realized how much pain something so small could cause. I did some research and found low B12 can be the cause. My Dr. put me on B12 injections I give myself. I gave myself an extra shot and the sores were gone within 24 hours and have not returned. I will continue to up my shots to bi-weekly for a couple of months. You can get your levels checked, or see if your PCP will give you an injection. You get more out of those.

You could have a yeast infection in your mouth. Call your surgeon, They have a Nistatin swish and swallow, or diflucan, and it will clear up very fast --

If you're doing chewable vitamin C or chewable vits that could cause it too. Or suddenly taking a lot more vit c in general. Or eating too many citric fruits. Docs tend to see a lot of them when the cherry tomatoes are on full and people who don't usually eat a lot of citric fruits are eating them by the ton. Also a change in toothpaste. Also catching a virus can cause them. Go to your doc and have him give you a paste to cover them with specifically designed for inside your mouth. It doesn't really taste like anything at all and helps protect the sores from your own mouth's enzymes allowing the sores to heal faster.

You may want to add lysine to ur diet. My bf actually gets cold sores frequently. It is due to a vitamin deficiency.

Many people have Herpes Simplex I, the cold sore type. It is generally given to you when a child. As children share everything! You can harbor it without it causing problems until your immunity is lowered; a cold, a physical stressor such as major surgery, emotional stress, even excessive amounts of sunlight, etc. When it does occur, there are prescription meds you can use. But to be honest with you, the best treatment & prevention is just to take over the counter L-Lysine. It is an amino acid and provides the extra bit you need to heal the sores. You can take 2-3 pills the first few days, and then use one every day to prevent them from every coming back once they are healed. I have used this for years with my children & myself and when taking the L-Lysine, have never had a recurrance. It is inexpensive and doesn't have side-effects. As always, if you have any questions or doubts about what you have, always see your doctor and have him treat you. karen morris, rn
