Question:
Is s/f peanut butter allowed on the all liquid part of diet?
I purchased a book about gastric bypass (Before & After) and it lists peanut butter in the list of things that are "okay" for the "full liquids" diet phase. I am 7 days post op. I'm struggling greatly to get protein in; everything tastes awful and makes me feel nauseous. But we got some s/f PB, and it smells heavenly. — qrlylox13 (posted on March 26, 2009)

Peanut butter is not a liquid. It will not slide down like a liquid. You
can use it later but not on the full liquid portion of the diet.

I used peanut butter as part of a soy/rice protein and frozen banana
smoothie. I would get the chocolate flavored proteins, mix the soy and
rice proteins together, add my own sweetener (I am allergic to sugar, and
cannot use either Nutrasweet or Splenda because the trigger my migraines).
I used the frozen banana, and the peanut butter to thicken the mixture, and
the peanut butter added extra protein to the mix. I used both the rice and
the soy protein to get a complete protein. The peanut butter was just
added protein. Sometimes I would also add almonds. Just make sure that
everything is well blended.

The only food list you should be following is the one your surgeon or your
NUT gives you. Peanut butter is far from being a liquid so you definitely
need to check with one or both of them before attempting to try it. It has
a tendency to be very difficult for some post ops to digest so if you
decide to gamble, be very careful!

Everyone CALM DOWN. This person has a book that says peanut butter is on
the liquid list and instead of just eating it, she is checking with her
other resource close at hand... all of us! Good job!
Instead of assuming that she is cheating or on the road to bad behavior
(which she has NOT done btw), answer her question! Really, many of you are
not just harsh but rude and mean. I understand that it comes from your own
anguish, really, I do, and I sympathize. We all understand what it means
to hate yourself, at times, but it doesn't excuse being rude and mean.
This question can be gently answered.
Kim, I think that you should give a quick call to the doctor's office and
ask them. Perhaps they will advise you that a spoonful put into the shake
is what the book is talking about. However, maybe not. Call and at least
the nurse can get back to you. Let us know!

There is a product called PB2. It's peanut butter in dry powder form. You
can either put it into drinks for your protein or put water into it to get
it back to regular form. It's also fat free.I know it's in some stores in
my area(Lancaster, PA). I'm not sure where you live. I first saw it on
e-bay.
I hope this helps.

P.s . We don't hate ourselves, are you talking about yourself, we love
ourselves and being HONEST isn't being rude. It is honesty and the rode
to good health It is not enabling someone.

I love PB. I did ask my nut and was told to wait for 2 weeks until you
reach the pureed and soft food stage. Becuase it can "get stuck"
she didn't want me to try it in the first 2 weeks. Keep you chin up. Some
people can seem harsh but they aren't trying to be mean. Some of us have
already made mistakes and don't want you to make the same ones. I have
cheated a few times and I told my NUT about it and she said that it
happens. Don't make a habbit of it becuase you have come this far and
taken this huge step to better your self and your life.... the liquid
stage is very hard especially if you have a family because you can see and
smell what everyone else is having and you want it. Just keep asking
quesitons and you will be fine.

If you are really craving peanut butter for the full liquid diet, purchase
the s/f davinci flavored syrups. Peanut butter is one of them which you
can add to a chocolate protein shake. I use to love peanut butter cups so
now I make my chocolate and p/b protein shake daily. There are many
different flavors to choose, just be creative. BTW, I have that book too,
it's great :)

Hi Kim....Unfortunately,Enehlah is unable to be as most folks from
Phoenix....nice and understanding. You asked a simple question. 80% of the
simple questions on this board should be directed to the Docs but it's nice
to have a kind place to come to and talk things over with others in the
same or similar situations. My nut has also said that yes indeed peanut
butter is indeed on a full liquid. In moderation of course but I think you
are looking to get the taste buds satisfied and certainly flavoring a
smoothie or such with PB would do just that. I think it is also worth
mentioning that we all know that we come here for ideas and we would not do
something off the wall and detrimental to ourselves without checking with
the Doc that was knee deep in our bellies. And that book is highly
recommended I have noticed by many. In closing I might mention to you that
my nut also has cottage cheese on my FULL LIQUID sheet. I am going to a
Center of Excellence and there is a difference in all of them. Good Luck to
you Kim.

A thought on the "hard to get proteins in" Have you tried Unjury
protein powders? Unjury.com I gagged on everything else, but found unjury
unflavored to be easy to handle. i mixed it with milk and water and it
really has little taste at all. In milk you hardly notice it. I use it
still and mix it now with flavored nestles water. Hope you find this
useful! Congrats on the surgery and Good luck and God Bless in your
journey. Hugs, Kim

Hi Kim.... My doctor has given us all a notebook with most if not all the
information we need to have for the first 6 months post-op, including
sample diet stages. Peanut butter is listed in my sample diet stage at
weeks 3 through 5. I think it is up to your individual surgeon and his or
her experience with patients, actually. I am aware of the powdered peanut
butter and the Da'Vinci flavoring... and would say that if you're craving
the flavor, I'd go with one of those in a shake before I'd actually try to
eat peanut butter. Now, that could be because I'm 3 weeks out and I'm stil
having a few issues with soft foods getting stuck, so I'd be extra careful.
Good luck to you!

WOW! What a reading. I agree with almost everything that is said. Honesty
is great. It's how we word things that make us interpret things in
different ways. Reading a message can be taken totally different than a
verbal message. Just remember, we are all here to help, but be careful how
we write/word things. good luck.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the good advice. HJ Doe -I did not
appreciate your scolding - did not deserve that!
What is this Q&A section for, if not to ask questions? I'm not about
to compromise what my surgeon has done; if I were, I would not be coming
here for advice and info! To everyone else, thanks for not turning me off
completely to this resource!
I will wait on the PB - it was not an emergency - just a question(!). I've
also ordered some of the unflavored unjury protein - thanks so much for the
advice!

I would check with your dietician or nutritionist, but peanut butter sounds
a bit heavier than a full liquid. Perhaps mixing it into oatmeal or a
smoothie will help with the thickness of it.
