Question:
I'm 6 weeks post-op and can't eat ANYTHING without wanting to vomit

This is so scary. My doc. and nut insists there's nothing wrong but will i ever be able to eat again?    — nubiangodess624 (posted on September 7, 2008)

My surgery is tomorrow. But my doc told me that my taste in food would probably change drastically once I can eat solid foods again. Gee, if you feel like you have to be sick whenever you eat, why don't you ask your doc for a prescription to minimize the nausea? I assume you are drinking all the water you are suppose to drink. In the meantime, are you at least taking in some protien shakes or do they make you nauseous too?

I had a big problem with nausea and vomiting for three months after my WLS. I figured out that I was gulping and eating too fast. I bought a baby "sipee" cup and a baby spoon to remind myself that my pouch is a baby:) I had to learn to slow down, really, really slow down and not eat with any conversation or distractions of any kind. You will heal and be better. I have lost 59 pounds since my RNY on 4/30/08, for a total of 87 pounds since my application date. I am grateful, joyful and free! I put on a size 10 jean today and it fits perfectly (without any tire "push-up" at the waist). I am very grateful!!

I, too, was sick after everything I ate for about 5 months following surgery (4/18/07). The only thing I could keep down was protein shakes (made with water or soy milk now that I'm lactose intolerant), but they made me sick enough that I had to lay down for at least an hour after I had one. My doctor and nutritionist told me there was nothing wrong too, and that "sometimes it happens". An employee at my local health food store saved my life - literally, as far as I'm concerned. She turned me on to digestive enzymes. Once I started taking those before eating I was able to eat small amounts of protein and drink my protein shakes without getting so ill, and I was also then able to get some energy back. I was barely getting in 300 calories a day and I was weak as a kitten. Check with your doctor first, of course, but mine said there was nothing to lose. I'm a little ticked off the doc or nut. didn't suggest trying the enzymes, but I was so grateful to feel better that I didn't complain too loudly. That health food store employee saved my life, and the lives of everyone I've recommended the enzymes too. Hope they work for you as well as they did for me!

I'm going to we 8 weeks out on tuesday and I still have the problem with getting sick or wanting to. I found that I do the best with more liquid stuff, Soups, popcicles, jellos, that kind of stuff. I can do cheese well but heavier things like chicken, turckey or fish just make me hurt or I get sick. Everyone tells me I will get over it and it does get easier. My mother and sister both are over 5 yrs and can eat almost anything with little or no problem.

I HEAR YOU!!!! I had RYN July 16th and am still having problems getting anything down or just being nasea it is getting better, alot of it is that I think I was making myself sick eating too fast or drinking too soon. I take the nasea pills that my doctor gave me, the sippie cup works. I use a plastic spoon it is smaller then a regular spoon. Just stop before u r too full. Try eating ice it helps. It is no fun being sick, feeling sick. I was to the point I was afraid of eating making myself sick just thinking i was going to get sick. Hang in their and when you find something that works stick with it for a while. I can not drink anything of milk even the smell is bad. I will keep u in my thaughts Tammi

Please talk to your surgeon. I'm 7 weeks post-op and am going exactly through the same thing. I throw up everything that's a solid, no matter how little and slowlyI eat, and how well I chew it. It's getting worse daily. I used to could eat scrambled eggs but throw even that up now. I called my surgeon this morning and told him everything and he is doing an EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) this week. An EGD is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualises the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract up to the duodenum. He suspects that I have stomastinosis, and if so, during the procedure, he will do Esophageal Dilatation to stretch the stoma (the surgically created part that connects our new pouch to the intestines) with a balloon. It takes about 2 1/2 hours from prep thru the procedure and you aren't put to sleep, but are in "twilight" and you won't remember anything. Sometimes our stoma just closes too tightly during healing and causes a Gastrogastric Stricture. These strictures occur in 5% to 10% of patients after roux-en-y gastric bypass. This complication presents as dysphagia, vomiting, and/or food intolerance. This problem is generally easily addressed by endoscopic balloon dilation. Follow-up dilations may be required (the nurse said 90% are resolved after one dialation), but surgical revision is rarely required. I'll let you know how mine turns out, but all of you, please consult your surgeons!

Maybe you are just eating too much or too fast. I'm 6 weeks out of Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch and I am not enjoying much of the food, and sickened by the protein supplements, but I have not thrown up. Are you taking iron? My doc switched my iron because it was upsetting my stomach so I just stopped it and when I saw him he replaced it with repliva - it's better.

I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time... it's miserable feeling sick. You might want to ask your doctor if he can prescribe you some anti-nausea medication. As far as being able to eat again, you are only 6 weeks out... give it time. I sip warm ginger tea when I am feeling sick. Hang in there!

I am 4 months and 1 week post RNY and I had that problem too for a while..3 or so months. I have not been noticing it too badly the past 2 weeks or so. It does get better, I promise. I called my Dr and Nut too..."Nothing's wrong. Just keep experimenting." That's what they told me. Well, things I could not eat last month actually have a little better taste now..Keep your head up and be strong!! Good luck and God bless!
