Any number of bad things can happen to you if you don't get enough protein and SLOW LOSING OR NOT LOSING AT ALL is one of them. Protein is VITAL.

Also when you are in ketiosis... protien in your diet will help prevent your body from cannabalizing itself. Otherwise you body will met it's protien needs whether you eat the protien or not by taking it from the muscles - not a good situation to be in. <p>Take Care, Be Well, Be Happy!

Not only can lack of protein intake slow down or stop your weight loss, but when you aren't gettining enough protein, your body starts burning muscle instead of fat and you get muscle wasting. However, if you get way too much protein, it will get stored as fat, so follow your dietary instructions. I've known many patients who were on plateaus and as soon as they increased their protein and water intake, they started losing weight again. Good luck!

If you don't get the needed protein, losing weight will be the least of your worries. Sure you will lose weight - unless your filling up on starchy carbs and junk food. But if you eat veggies instead - strictly veggies, then you would lose weight - look at people in 3rd world countries, they lose and eat very little protein - BUT they are also malnurished and sick!

At 5 weeks out, I have noticed a dramatic difference in my moods and energy level when I don't get enough protein. When I don't get enough, I also don't lose. As soon as I get back on track...2 or 3 lbs gone..easily. Pre-op I was not a big fan of all the guidelines about eating. Post-op I realize just how important and TRUE they are. If you're having a hard time getting enough in, which happens to me all-too-often, I switched to drinking my protein shake at night instead of in the morning. It gave me all day to do my best and then a boost to meet goal only if necessary. Good luck.
