Question:
Energy
Ok, I have one more question! I am 3 1/2 weeks post op from having an open gastric bypass! When I wake up in the morning, I typically feel good but as the day goes on -- I'm lethargic and worthless! Is this normal and will I get my energy back? Things like going grocery shopping or to walmart absolutly wears me out!!! Help, I have a 9 year old and feel like I am letting my family down!! Thanks again friends!!! — amgentry (posted on December 27, 2009)

It will come and go depending on how much protein you get in. Make sure
you are taking all your vitamins. I use the Bariatric Advantage Multi--it
recommends two a day but I take three. My body needs it. You may also
want to add a sublingual B12 twice per day. After three months I starting
getting B12 shot once every three weeks. I has helped tremendously with
the fatigue. I had RNY but it was a bander that told me about the shots.
I can tell when they start wearing off, the fatigue returns. So, take
those vitamins, eat/drink the protein. It will get better!

Make sure you are taking your vitamins, no matter what. Now, I was told to
take sub B12 and a B1(thiamine) one a week, but it was not enough for me. B
vitamins your body does not store so anything to take in and not use, you
will excrete it. I take a B12 in the morning and usually at night, and I
take a B1 once every two-three days. I also take a Feosol iron at night
before bed, since I am takin my calcium supplements all day for better
absorption. And I also take a mag, zinc and potassium suppl. every couple
of days. AND I FEEL GREAT, I only feel week, when I dont take my vitamins
and not keeping up with the protein. I also get the B12 shot once a month.
Energy is awesome now, had my surgery on 11/3 and felt like crap for a
month. When I started this vitamin regiment within 24 hours I felt
normal.....it is a trial and error or trial and success process on what
works for you. And this is what works for me. But seriously try the B12
thing, you will be amazed....

Sometimes the anesethsia can stay with you for awhile. Plus you just had a
major surgery. It isn't like you had a mole removed or something small.
You will get your engery back, although it could take up to 2-3 months. I
am not saying this is the case with you. But just take your protein,
vitamins and follow instructions and you will have more energy as time goes
on. Plus, since your g/bypass was open, vs lap, the healing time is a
little slower too. You aren't letting anyone down, I am sure they will
understand, that you had a major surgery. Best wishes to you.

I had surgery on 12/10 and find I am very tired too. It is a combination
of major surgery, anesthesia, and a much lower calorie intake than usual.
A trip to the grocery store wears me out but each day I have a little more
energy. Remember, most people do not just bounce back from major surgery.
You are not letting your family down, you are in the process of getting
healthy so you will be around for them for a long time.

It's interesting....recovery is so different for people. I had RNY on
March 2nd of this last year (I am almost 10 months out) was so full of
energy from day one that I went shopping almost every day (needed to,
because I was having problems with my JP drain and had to go and get new
dressings frequently). Before surgery, I napped every afternoon, and after
surgery, I think I only napped two or three times. I've also noticed that
I require MUCH less sleep at night. Where I used to want to sleep until
10:00 in the morning, or even 11:00.... now I'm automatically awake at 6:00
or even earlier, even when I didn't get to sleep until midnight or one a.m.
I went back to work 11 days after surgery and never felt any fatigue or
tiredness at all. But then, I've been religious about taking my vitamins
and eating exactly the way they told me to, and getting all my protein in
and keeping my carbs low and all that stuff.

Hello,
I agree with the other posters that you have to faithfully take your
vitamins, get your protein in and drink the required 64 oz of water each
day! I can't stress this enough! If you're tired it's because 1) you've
just had major surgery and recovery time is different for EVERYONE 2) you
will get your energy back, be patient, but continue taking your vitamins
and getting in your required 50-75 grams of protein per day.
Although you can't eat/drink in the very beginning it will gradually get
better, I promise, remember your surgery is a jump start to getting you on
track to being a healthier you, it is however, NOT an end all or a magic
pill that will let you eat the way you use to.
I've had much success with my surgery which was on November 12, '08 and
to-date I've lost 105 lbs, I went from a 24 to a 12 and I'm still loosing
weight. I'm also working out 3-4 times a week at Curves.
I have not had any problems with loosing my hair or being tired, but I have
found through my doctor follow-up visits and my labs, my iron and my B-12
was low, but after taking my liquid iron and liquid B-12 I'm back on
track.
You will have to take your vitamins, continue your protein, your calcium,
etc for the rest of your life, this is no joke, this is serious if you want
to continue on the road of being healthy!
I hope this helps you, check out my new pix, my birthday was on December
25th Christmas day and my goal was to loose 100 lbs by my birthday (which I
did) so that I could be still fabulous at 50!
