Question:
Doctor whats me to lose 40 before he will do the surgery?
I was in to see the doctor and he whats me to lose 40 pounds in Two months. He also said he wants to do the lap band. I wanted to have the bypass. He said tha band would be safer due to I have CHF. I also weigh 330 pounds and he then said he may have to cut me open. Has anyone had this happen? He said it could come apart if he does the bypass. Help please.... — lscheller (posted on May 29, 2009)

Lisa,
The weight loss sounds right. I don't get what he means that it will come
apart. Have you spoken to your cardiologist about this? For now start the
low-carb to no carb diet you have 2 months to cover all your basis.

He said were he would cut and put it back together could come apart due to
how much I weigh. I did not hear that from the first doctor I seen but this
one said it could happen. Has this ever happened before? I did not find
anything on this.

I've seen Dr's do the RNY on patients MUCH heavier than you. If done right
there would be no reason it should come apart. I personally would research
and find a different Dr.

I'd get a second opinion too. I understand him wanting you to lose weight
before the surgery, but I don't think I'd be comfortable with a doctor
saying his work could "come apart" afterwards. Maybe he was just
trying to scare you, but I'd pick a doc with a better bedside manner. And a
better track record of successful surgeries. Where things don't come
apart!!

DITTO! I would definately interview a few surgeons. The weight loss I
understand but the rest of it? Something doesn't sound right to me either.

I would look for a different doctor. My mom had surgery at over 400 pounds
and her doctor was able to do it laproscopically AND she was 62 at the
time.

The 40 pound weight loss is at the surgeons' descretion. As far as the
rest, I would suggest finding another doctor. You see I,too, have
congestive heart failure. And like you, I'm over 300. Yet my surgeon
agreed with my desire to have RNY. When the surgery happens, it will be
done laproscopicly. As I said, try finding another surgeon.

If I were you, I would get a different surgeon...NOT because he wants you
to lose 40 lbs...but because of the other things he said. Find a surgeon
with MUCH more experience in open RNY should that be necessary! Your
surgeon has only done 15 total and that my friend is NOT enough experience
for me, NO THANKS! ...I was 315 lbs and had open RNY and my scar is 4
inches long and less then a half inch thick...I was asked to lose 10 lbs
however I could...

I just had my surgery and weighed 340 going into it. I was able to have the
RNY procedure. My doc never even suggested I had to have an open procedure.
In fact he told me there was no reason I was more likely than others to do
an open procedure. In terms of weight loss, that's up to the surgeon. It
helps to lose weight because there is less fatty tissue around your liver,
but I didn't have to lose much because my very underactive thyroid along
with my use of insulin makes weight loss almost impossible. I would find
another surgeon if you can. Find one who will work with you and respects
you.

Lisa....Dr.Shin has done over 300 Lap's and he is comfy with those and only
15 Open Rny's. PLEASE.....There MUST be a better Doc in West Virginia!!!!!
This is a huge commitment for you dear, do not trust in someone that has
such minimal experience and what he is saying sounds insane in my opinion.
God Bless and Best of Luck to you.

Sounds like you need a differant doctor. He is a specialist in Lapband. You
need a bypass doctor.
The weighttloss requirement is pretty normal.
