Question:
Scared about loosing too much weight

My gastric bypass is scheduled for next month. I'm excited to get rid of the Diabetes and weight. I'm really scared about loosing too much weight & that I won't stop loosing weight. Has anyone here kept loosing so much weight that it became a medical problem? I'm concerned because as heavy as I am, currently 220lbs., I love working out & if I loose the weight after surgery & keep up with my workouts, I'm afraid that my body won't stop loosing weight. Hope I wasn't too confusing. Please help. Ruthie    — Ruth M. (posted on January 24, 2009)

Ruthie, Congrats on your decision to be a healthier; hotter you. After the surgery you will find that your eating and digestion change dramatically. If your are truly healthy before surgery you shouldn't have too much problem, I didn't. If you feel it is a concern then you can talk to your doc and then your dietician or nutritionist. You might also research a personal trainer for guidance on your workouts so you don't overdo or research things on your own and incorporate them into your workout. I share in your excitement; I think its wonderful. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl, retired RN

My husband had a VBG about 8 years ago. It wasn't a problem until about 2 years ago when he started to drop weight like crazy and couldn't keep anything down. Scar tissue had built up around the ring but once that was repaired, he's fine. The after-care is so much better now than it was then. Everything I've read says your body adjusts to the weight loss eventually.

Hi Ruthie, I also was concerned about that because 3 of my friends did exactly that, they lost too much and had to gain back some. But with the amount of weight I've had to loose I've been ok. I'm a little over a year and down from 360 to 235. I think its different when you have less to loose, have you considered the band instead? Just be careful and mindful of your calorie intake and you should be ok. It is difficult, not easy to loose and maintain. Good Luck.

Ruthie, with your concerns, if at all possible consider having the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. It is much less likely to have an adverse affect on you in the long run. The malapsorption issue is not there, nor is the dumping, so if you need to up your calories to maintain your weight it will be easier to do. With the sleeve you can TECHNICALLY eat anything you want, just in very small amounts. I know this may be a last minute change, but you need to weigh all the options before you change your body surgically and irreversibly.

Ruthie, I'm almost 4 yrs out and have regained half of what I lost. I only wish loosing too much was my concern. I don't know your height, but 220lbs is not too obese. You are making the right decision by getting healthy. I've never regretted having RNY, and would do it again at this very moment because it gave me back the lifestyle I was accustomed to. Everyday now I dread getting dressed because I see the weight I've gained and I hate it. Good luck with your surgery. Cheryle
