Question:
I will be having a Gastric Bypass Surgery very soon. How long the operation takes?

I would like support please. I am very scared of the whole experience.    — halahmad (posted on September 6, 2008)

Congratulations! I guess it depends on whether you have an open or a lap procedure. I had a lap RNY on August 18th. The surgery lasted about 2 hrs for me. I stayed in the hospital overnight and was back home the next afternoon. Keep us posted on how you are doing! Best Wishes.

Of course you're scared, it is very major surgery. But if you've done your research and are satisfied with your decision, try to relax and look forward to your new, healthy life.

Good surgeon and a good team with him can do it in a hour, but the average is 1 hour 20 minutes. That is actually time they are working on you, the rest is getting you out and bringing you back in recovery. That depends on you and the guy putting you out.

Mine took about two and a half hours, so I'm told. It will go by in the blink of an eye for you.

Every one has pre-op jitters. I said I didn't want the surgery right up until they wheeled me into the operating room. It was just like rolling over and suddenly realizing it was already done. From that point it's all downhill, and your biggest concern is not to get in too much of a hurry and enjoy the journey. You'll find the pounds melt off like magic and you'll wonder why it took that operation for you to do it. You'll marvel at the great quantities of food that people, even small women and kids eat. You'll have to exercise and progress slowly to more sophisticated foods, but all that should return will return in time. You'll wind up wondering why you waited so long. Yes it is a serious operation and you should think long and hard about whether you are willing to adhere to the guidelines after the surgery. It's like walking through a door into your new life. See you on the journey. Dusty

My surgery was about 2 hours. I was unsure about having it up until they put me out. Now I'm 7 weeks out and can't believe the changes in my life! I knew this operation was the forced lifestyle change I needed to get healthy and stay healthy! Just take it slow and easy after the operation (new foods) and you'll do just fine!!!!!!!!

My lap RNY took about 3 hours. I went into the hospital on a Tuesday morning and came home on Thursday. I am almost 2 1/2 months out and doing great. The first couple of weeks can be a little rough trying to remember all the stuff you are supposed to do and not do. I have made a few mistakes along the way, but I am sure a lot of people have too. We are human and stuff happens. Good luck with your surgery and keep us posted. lisa

The surgery does take several hours, just so it is done safely. I had mine done probably 7 years ago, my mom had her's 10 years ago, my brother about 5 years ago, my aunt 3 years ago, and my sister-in-law is in the process of getting ready for it. Please feel free to e-mail me for support. [email protected] My name is Kelly. I was scared like you and willing to help out anyway I can.

I had lap RYN on August 28th. I was very nervous going into the surgery too. The surgery took about 90 minutes and involved 6 small incisions. I was in the hospital 1 night. I was amazed at how little pain there was afterwards--it feels like you have worked out to hard--alittle sore but very tolerable. I was able to bend over and touch my toes a week later totally pain free. Looking forward to my new life. Good Luck.

This website is the best at supporting all who enter here. Like someone else said, just ask God to see you through and you will be fine. I am 17 days out and i cried like a baby going into the operating room nervous and worried. Now, I would go in smiling if i had to do it again cuz i am so happy and thoroughly excited about my journey. oh, my surgery was about 1 hour & 45 mins. not much pain at all-only took the meds to sleep. don't worry-you will be fine w/ a capital "FINE" kim
