Question:
I've put on 4 pounds since Monday HELP!!!!!!!

I don;t understand why this is happening. I've been consistantly losing since my surgery in April 2007, and I've lost at total of 110 lbs. and only about 15 to go. I have eaten a few carbs here and there, plus I eat cottage cheese not non fat becasue it's to watery for me. And I have eaten a small piece of fish, a 3/4 of a cheese enchillada, low-fat vanilla yougort with a few raisins and small amount of brown sugar. I also have one protien drink a day and have had some tortilla chips with salsa and cheese. I drink liquid all day and about 3 to 4 cups of coffee with non-dairy creamer and splenda. So what's up with the weight gain? I can't figure it out. I exersize by doing my walking around the store doing my daily running around (I need my left hip replaced) so a lot of exersize is out right now. Oh I forgot I also have cashews too. Can someone help me with this? I'm freaking out!!!!! Thanks for your imput, Joni    — jonicorona (posted on January 11, 2008)

I had surgery on May 10, 2006. FYI, most people do not reach the "ideal weight" just about 15% above it. Those who do reach their ideal weight tend to be very rigid in their eating habits, water intake, and exercise. Most of these people are at the gym 3-4 days per week, eat no red meat, very little carbs, no sugar, etc. Most of would have difficulty living this life style. But everybody is somewhat different. From attending bariatric support groups for the past 18 months, I've noted that most people who are 18 months or longer post op, do tend to have a minor weight fluctiation, say a 5 pound range. Exercise should be a daily activity for weight maintenance. Some cheeses are high in fat, same for tortillas. Cashews are high in fat and normally salty. Almonds are a much better choice, in moderation. I make a small cheese burrito a couple of times each week. There are "special tortillas" at my local store, that are about 9 inches in diameter, come in several "flavors", have 1 gram of sugar, 100 calories, a AND 7 GRAMS OF PROTEIN. With low fat string cheese added, this is a nice snack. Another one I've found is dried peas, found at health food stores. 1/4 cup of these gives you 6 grams of protein, and it's a green vegetable.

Is it almost that time of the month? I always gain a little that time of the month.

My Dr. also said that coffee can stop you from losing weight. And with you having 3 to 4 cups a day, that could be part of the problem. Kim

I've also heard that once your body hit's it's own ideal weight, that is where you pretty much stay. So maybe you want 15 more lbs, but your body is saying no. I agree with the other posters, it could also be that you have had a lot of salt intake this week, or it's your menstral cycle week, etc. Hang in there and maybe see about substituting a protein shake for one of your meals. 5 lbs is nothing to really worry about, but keep an eye on it. Also, I've heard that some people go to www.fitday.com or something like that and keep a diary every day so they can see what actually happens if anything does and or they print it out and take it to their nutrionist for help/questions. But great job on the loss! Good luck and God bless!

I just had to comment to that it's not necessarily true that you have to have a strict lifestyle to maintain at your desired weight, or even get to that weight. I've lost 93% of my weight (202 pounds - the 7% is skin, so can't do anything about that). I've been at the same weight for over 5 months (with a few fluctuations) and eat very well. I eat more carbs than most due to my workout schedule (I run 20 miles a week and do lots of other fun activities) and have treats every now and then. But i never feel like I live on a strict diet, ever. And I know many others who are able to do the same - live a healthy, active life while not starving themselves. Some may think that exercising the way I do is strict, but I LOVE to exercise, it is my big stress relief and the highlight of my day. So know that it is possible to reach your goal weight and stay there, it does happen. It may not happen at the lightning speed in the past but it can happen. I've also gone through periods where I gain during the week - the reasons have varied, ie my period, too much salt in my diet, my body just wanting to be stubborn. It sounds like you know what you are eating, but do you track it everyday? Do that for a few weeks and see what you come up with. You just may need to tweak a few things to help it along. Just don't panic, it happens to everyone. Just be extra diligent over the next few weeks and see if you see a pattern. And definitely talk to your nutritionist to see if she has any ideas. Good luck!

I have found, thru experience, that those pounds that magically appear.... overnight and obviously not due to something I've eaten (because eating 5lbs in a day is unlikely) that it is most likely due to hydration... retaining water due to hormones or perhaps salt intake. Sometimes our bodies do weird stuff like this... keep doing what you're doing and you'll be fine. Nutritionally, it looks like your doing fine. Maybe keep an eye on sugar/carbs... enchillada, yogurt, raisins and brown sugar.... small amounts infrequently. Keep up the hard work!! You are doing a great job. If you're looking for exercise, considering swimming.... very low impact, shouldn't bother your hip. Best wishes.

CONGRATS on your weight loss and you will take off the extra 15. If you are concerned about the plateau, may I suggest keeping a food diary, measure & weigh your portions. As for the non-fat cottage cheese, I drain mine in a mesh-type strainer, then spoon the cheese back into the original container. Unless your coffee is decaf, regular coffee contributes to water retention, as does the high-salt foods, such as the Mexican food and nuts. Don't panic, just remember you only have 15 more to go!!!
