Question:
Monday I will be 4 weeks post-op and I am not really sure how much sugar
(the sugar that is in the ingredients) I can have and if any what can happen to me from this? — angelswings711 (posted on July 29, 2006)

That varies by person. I used to dump on fat as well as carbs, but I think
the biggest issue is to make sure that what you eat is tempered with
protein. This is a trial and error thing that varies by person. For me,
if I had enough protein in my meal, I could have 12-20 grams of carbs
without getting sick. But if I just had crackers or crackers with cheese
even sometimes, I would dump. So just go slowly and work your way up
slowly. Better to have a mild dump than a big one!

You/your daughter should be avoiding anything with Sugar! She had the
surgery to become healthier and loss weight along the way. Sugar
substitudes would be a better choice. And when buying Sugar-Free products
be sure to check the ingrediants for Sugar Alchohol and other items which
are sugar base ingrediants. She will know maybe not right away but probably
by the next day when she'll be dumping. When I start to dump it usually
last about 3-4 hours for me.

I used to get sick from too much sugar at that stage. Unfortumately I no
longer do unless I really overindulge. There ary many good sugar
substitutes out there, I really like Splenda. You can even cook with it.

You will find out soom enough how much sugar you can tolerate. I dump easy
and I never eat more than 3-5grams of sugar at one meal. I'm happy with
that because it keeps me from eating the cakes and the cookies that made me
fat in the first place. I was never one to eat large portions of food. I
would just eat cookies cake and ice cream all day. Thankfully thats over. I
have maintained by goal weight now for 16 months and never miss the sugar.
Good luck with your venture and never forget that this time is your window
of opportunity. Use it wisely.

I am unable to use artificial sweeteners due to severe migraines (they are
my trigger), so I try to use splenda or keep the regular sugar grams low.
Just use common sense if you must use the regular sugar. In addition to my
intollerance of artificial sweeteners, I am hypoglycemic. So, I have to
have a little bit more sugar than the average person.

You are bettter off eating very little sugar, just so you don't get into
the habit of eating it aggain. Different people can tolerate different
amounts, in terms of dumping. I know people who could always eat sweets
post op and nver dumped. You have to see what works for you, but I advise
that save your sugar for occassional treats, just from a weight loss
standpoint.
