Question:
Has anyone been told not to ever take any pain relievers but tylenol.
I have a lot of pain in my hips. I used to take celebrex for arthritis. I would like to take it again, even if only once or twice a week. I didn't even know I had the pain in my hips until I quit taking it. I had been taking it for my knees. Has anyone, post op a few months been cleared to take it again? — geneswife (posted on June 10, 2006)

Yes - My Dr is emphatic about NOT taking any aspirin like products
(including advil) it can cause ulcers in the little pouch. It happened to
a woman (who did not listen to him) in my support group. If you had a
bypass he says that we can only absorb gel caps - I bought the new Tylenol
gel caps and they worked on a headache for me!!! Ask your Dr though.
Best of luck.

Some docs tell you to take a PPI with it, but that isn't the problem. The
PPI's furhter reduce the protective mucous of the stomach/pouch and the
anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) can burn the lining more easily. If an ulcer
was all that was at stake, it might be worth the risk, but for many, the
first symptom of a problem is gastric bleed when they are in ER. You
might ask about plaquenil. It is harmless to the pouch, eases joint pain
BUT you have to have your eyes checked twice/yr. I've been using it for 10
yrs. I can take Vicodin, but of course, not daily for life. And I won't
take Tylenol (family) daily because of the liver thing, but now and then,
of course.

I have had four hip replacements and two knee replacements.
They gave me liquid hydrocodone-APAP solution Qua. That was working formy
bones. Then the sinus headaches started. They switched me to Tramadol HCL
50mg tablets. I didn't notice while I was taking the tablets how the pain
in my bones dulled, until I stopped taking them. I switched to the
tablets. DO NOT take these together. I like the Tramadol so much better
for my bones. Hope this helps.

I am currently taking celebrex 100mg daily for my knees and back. At the
same time I take it I also take Prilosec. My doc begrudgely put me on this
because Tylenol was doing a thing for me and I issues with Ultram. I do
know that Ultram works for many people so it may be a viable option, I was
just the rare individual that it gave problems. Goodluck!

I have been taking Mobic, but was on Vioxx and bextra before they were
discontinued. It hasn'y bothered me at all and it works soooo gooood for
the arthritis pain. I do take prilosec for GERd so maybe that protects my
stomach.

My surgeon was the head of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic surgery at a large
teaching hospital. When I asked about taking occasional Vioxx (back then),
or ibuprofen, he said he had never seen any pouches damaged by occasional
use. Acetomenophen (Tylenol) is a complete waste of time - never got any
kind of relief before or after surgery. I get some killer headaches, and
some vicious cramps, and I can't put my life on hold for them. Everyone
knows someone who had problems because they took NSAIDs and burned their
pouch. If a person gets an ulcer and they admit to taking ibuprofen, that
is where the blame goes, when it could be casued by other things! As far as
gel-caps - I was told to avoid those, so there you go! The only absolute
with weight loss surgery is that there are no absolutes. I believe if you
take NSAIDs occasionally, and with a meal, the chances of developing a
problem are pretty slim. I will repeat this again, as I do whenever this
type of question comes up- NO ONE has ever come up with any bonafide
medical studies or evidence that NSAIDs are pouch burners! It is all
anecdotal stories with no clear proof. PLease email me if you can find a
study that proves NSAIDs damage post RNY folks' pouches.

Billie,
I take a product called Joint support, it helps me tremdously, from being
327 to 130... my knees had had it!!!
I double up and break them in half.
Good luck...yes Tylonol is what I was told to take too...It did not help! I
do not like the side effect to drugs, I only use this for my knocking knee
problems...Gosh, I could not go through anymore pain! Pain meds make me so
hungry too!!! UGGGG
Peace out,
Celeste

I was warned about taking Ibuprofen and aspirin. They can cause damage to
the pouch. Stick w/ Tylenol.
