When I woke up after surgery I was starving, I couldnt believe it! I never
did have a honeymoon period that everyone talkes about. Only 10% of
patients experience hunger befor the 6mo. honeymoon period. Of course I was
one of them. I was scared that maybe my stomach was to big or the opening
leaving the stomach was to wide, but once I started solids it became
perfectly clear my stomach was only 1oz big. I went to my 3mo. post op and
the Dr. was so happy with my weightloss, and we discussed my hunger issue,
he seemed a little concerned until he asked me how long after eating I
would get hungry again, and I told him about 4 or 5 hours, he said that,
that was fine, and if for some reason I stopped losing weight or could hold
more food than I should we could do an endoscopy to check it out. What it
ended up being in the end is this........before surgery I was 'starving',
all the time! I was so frustrated with the situation, because I would eat
feel full, stop, an hour later be starving, break down, eat again, and find
i couldnt because I was full, but completly starving at the same time! And
it wasnt head hunger, I know what that is, infact I have experienced head
hunger more now than before surgery, but its very managable its easy for me
to just dismiss it and go on. I was miserable before surgery. I had surgery
and thought I would wake up and not have to feel the hunger sensation for
6mo. well I woke up and couldnt beleive it, my stomach was smaller than my
mouth and I was starving. I thought I was in trouble, but turns out I just
have an over active hunger response, my brain kept sending hunger signals
to my stomach, but now it seems I have a normal hunger its more managable.
It wont always be so bad, once you start solids you'll be able to tell if
its a hunger response or your pouch is to big, either way its managable. I
remember those first 6 weeks being the hardest, I dont know if I could go
through it again, but I'm glad I did, because now I'm small and active and
happier than Ive been in a long time, I eat normally, and I could eat what
ever I wanted, tho' I dont, but its nice to know you could, ya know? It
makes me feel good to be in control of my eating, instead of my eating
controlling me. I hope this help, and just stick it out, the pay off is
more than is imaginable to you right now. Everyday I thank myself for
having a RNY. Good luck, Michelle

What I did was to "EAT" popsickles. That way it was really
liquid, not eating. But it satisfied the need to chew and swallow. And the
cold felt so great in the pouch.

Let me see if I can help. I had surgery on Feb 6th. I have felt hunger
pangs, but I also feel like I'm constantly "eating". I am having
3 protein meal replacements per day. I drink water, decaf iced tea, sugar
free Koolaid. I eat sugar free popsicles. I eat chicken broth and beef
broth (with lots of spices). I have managed to make it pretty good. I eat
strained cream of chicken soup. It is also pretty great and you can eat
with a spoon! This helps the mental part. I can also have yogurt. I have
followed everything to the letter and feel pretty satisfied. Now, I will
say my daughter brought Fajitas home the day after my surgery. Which I
just thought was wrong...but ya know. I also watched her eat pizza...also
not helpful...
My dietician and my post op paperwork is ok with the cream soups (if
strained) and yogurt (less than 10 g sugar).
I hope this helps. Have you talked to your dietician?

I am not sure where you are or who your Dr. was, but I was never on liquids
we were on pureed foods for 6 weeks, so if you are starving I would add
some soft foods in there. It also
depend on what type of surgury you had? If is was the band then yes you
should be on liquids, but if it was rny than I am not sure why you cannot
add foods back in just be careful what you eat & eat very slow &
small bites and chew your food very well. I am 2 years out on 3/15
Congrats on being on the losing side. it is all worth it believe me. Hang
in There!Marilyn, the Bearlady

I remember being so hungry that I cried. When it got to be too much, my
partner made me some very runny cream of wheat and I had a couple of
teaspoons of that. To my great suprise, I was full after that couple of
teaspoons. This was totally against my doctor's orders, but what's a girl
to do? Best of luck on this wild ride!!
