Question:
Is it typical to lose the desire for your favorite foods pre op?
Hi there, I am scheduled for an RNY on Jan 3, 2006 and lately I have noticed that when I eat my favorite foods, they don't taste very good to me. I don't like a lot of the foods that I used to. Is this typical pre surgery, or is it all in my head? Your comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Kristy H. — Kristy (posted on December 28, 2005)

Hi Kristy... the same thing happened to me. My LAP RNY was on 12/20/05, and
I thought I'd be trying to eat some of my favorite foods "for the last
time", but I couldn't do it. Yeah, I'd gone to a few favorite
restaurants, and the girls at work all took me out to eat a week or so
prior, but I didn't want or crave the foods I've loved for so many years. I
actually lost a few pounds just prior to the surgery. I think my body knew
a major change was coming and was trying to adjust. Hope this helps!

Very typical. I eventually got all my tastes back. Some never recover.
It is interesting isn't it?

I don't know -- haven't had the surgery yet. My partner did, however, I
don't think she lost the taste/desire for food prior to the surgery.
However, losing the taste now is a head start. Immediately after the
surgery she would ask for steak or pizza -- those were short-lived
cravings. I think about after 6 months -- she was able to start eating
those foods she liked -- one or two mouthfuls and she was done.

I am having Surgery in 4 weeks and I have noticed that also. Glad to find
it is somewhat common.

I had this happen to me, too. In fact, I was at my favorite burger joint
about a week before my surgery, and I started to feel sick. At the end of
my meal I hurried to the restroom and vomited everything up. It went on
for almost the entire week.

I am not able to eat my favorite food any more. I also developped some
allergy to chicken. Every time I try to eat chicken, I have a runny nose
and I start sneezing. I don't try to eat it anymore. I told my doctor and
my nutritionist about it and they don't have any answers. Since the
surgery they are certain foods, I am no longer able to eat because they
make me sick. Why? No one knows.

I'm scheduled for RNY on 1/1/06. I used to love french fries and lately I
have completely lost interest in them. Glad I'm not the only one this is
happening to..
