Question:
Questions re: South Beach Diet

I've just finished reading the South Beach Diet book, and am starting it today. My weight loss has been stalled since November, but it's my own fault for not sticking to a plan. A couple questions though: I'm confused about mayonnaise -- no mention of it whatsoever in the "Foods to Enjoy" or "Foods to Avoid" lists, but it appears in a couple of the Phase I recipes. Okay or not for Phase I? Regular mayo like Hellman's? Miracle Whip? Reduced fat or regular? Both appear in the recipes. Any suggestions for a decent dressing to put on salads? Oil and vinegar is my least favorite. Any other suggestions, particularly about getting through Phase I would be appreciated! Thanks much - Lap RNY 12/11/02 290/205    — Jules B. Hi! I have the SBD good carbs, good fats guide, and it says to avoid the fat-free mayo, and use the light or regular on a limited basis. It also lists fat-free, light, and regular miracle whip as limited. They list a dairy-free, soy-based, eggless mayo as good, but I've never seen that at the store..probably would be able to find it at a health food store...good luck..I'm reading the book now at 2.5 years post op and bought this guide along with it..gonna give it a shot, too! I've been at the same weight for basically the past 18 months, and have about 15lbs that I want to lose..Denise 316/158

You don't want Fat Free mayo because it usually has more carbs. Lite or regular, like Hellman's, is best in moderation. Miracle Whip has more sugar than any mayo, so avoid it also. For salad dressing, the Paul Newman Balsamic vinaigrette or Caesar are both good. You don't have to use fat free dressings; you should look for the ones with the "good fats" like olive oil in them. Don't forget that in Phase One you CAN have beans. Make a big pot of chili! We like many of the SB recipes in the book. Just try and get a good variety as much as possible. It's only 2 weeks and then you are on to Phase 2. Good uck. hugs, Ann .... RNY 9/10/99.... 260/124
