When I was searching for my surgeon I searched on the internet for
everything possible about him. Where he went to school, and negative or
positive things about him. When I went to his office I asked him what were
his mortality rates. How many people died under his car for WLS? How many
surgeries had he performed, and how many of each kind? I also checked to
see if he worked in or was with a center of excellence. Research as much as
possible, and if you feel he doesn't answer your questions the way you
like...then I would look for another surgeon. Dawn

Have him describe the different types of weight loss surgeries he performs.
Find out the advantages and disadvantages of each. Make sure you
understand the diet guidelines you'll be expected to follow. Remember,
these will be something you'll need to follow for the rest of your life if
you want to maintain your weight loss. The surgery is just a tool to make
that easier to do by limiting your hunger level. Also, I'd be cautious
about someone who only performs one type of weight loss surgery. If that's
the case, request information on a local weight loss surgery support group
he would recommend. Start attending now. You can ask questions of people
who have already had the surgery. There will be people there at various
stages. Make sure to find out from them the pros and cons of having the
surgery. Ask if they would have it again, knowing what they do now. If
there a people there who've had the by-pass vs. those who've had a
Lap-Band, have them describe the differences in their post-surgery
guidelines. I hope that gives you a few idea to get you started. I am 5
years post-op with the Lap-Band and am at my goal weight. If you have any
more questions, feel free to ask me anytime. God Bless.

Dr. Graber has an excellent reputation in the Utica area and he has been
recognized as a Center of Excellence. I had my LapRNY on Oct. 12,2009 by
his partner Dr. Fitzer, who also has a very good reputation. My surgery
went well and I am doing good. His office staff are very helpful and I
received excellent care at St. Luke's Hosp. You will receive lots of info.
when you attend your appt. Start making a list of anything that comes to
mind so you can be prepared to ask questions. I researched both Dr.s on the
internet prior to my surgery and I did not find out anything negative. Good
luck !

I have my first consult appointment with Dr. Fitzer in Jan 2010! I highly
recommend him, I have been watching several individuals in my area/work
that have had RNY by Graber and Fitzer, with excellent results. I too have
researched a lot of information in regards to the statistical data and
success rates. I trust them to do my surgery. Hey, is there anyone else
out there starting this journey around this time??
