Question:
RNY and women period
Has anyone had RNY been on their menstral cycle at time of surgery? I have my surgery for tomorrow and my period just came on this morning. My doctor said it's ok but I get low blood at time of period and I don't want any complications. Anyone ever experienced this and what happened? — bre25 (posted on November 12, 2008)

I also had my period when I had surgery, I am very anemic to begin with but
having my period during surgery and the hospital stay did not pose any
issues for me.n Just make sure to let them know, the floor nurses did not
know/ or get told I am not sure which so they were concerned a little until
I woke up and was able to explain it to them.

I woke up in recovery with mine. No big deal...They will keep track of all
your vital signs...And if you are low blood, you're in the best place to
deal with it! So try not to worry about those things...'cause if you need
blood they can get you some really fast!:) Good luck on your surgery and
your journey!

I just had my surgery on 11/06/08. I got my period the morning of the
surgery. I realized it as I was changing into my hospital gown. I am also
anemic, however, I did not have any complications. Just let the nurses,
doctors, and surgeon know that you are menstruating. It will not be a
problem. However, if you are used to a certain type of protection, I would
bring them with me to the hospital..The pads they give you are horrible.
At least fo me they were horrible. LOL. I am SO glad I brought my Stayfree
pads. It made it much easier to deal with. I used one of theirs and it
was WAY too think. Good luck to you and I wish you all the best.

My period started after my surgery. The only thing my surgeon did different
was took me off of the blood thinner meds. so I wouldn't bleed as heavily.
Good Luck!

I was told by my doc that most women have there periods right after surgery
due to having have surgery to the abdominal area. I had mines lasted for
about week longer than usual but not heavy. Just make sure you pack some
pads. No tampons you will be to sore to try and fool with those. LOL.

I started mine just before surgery - after not having one for nearly a
year! I was told that the stress brings it on i a lot of women and not to
worry about it. Evidently it is quite common! So, chances are if you
postponed your surgery, it would start up again before you go in the next
time! You should be fine - just be sure and let the nurses know - they are
great! And good luck! Wendy

Mine started a couple days before but was super, super light. They gave me
hospital-issue undies one of those hideous pads... but some brainiac
apparently decided I didn't need it. Which was a bad idea since they were
giving me Lovenox (blood thinning shots in my stomach). I woke up in my
room with a complete mess, think I was more mad than embarrassed. That
issue aside, it was ok. I'm usually pretty anemic too, but didn't have a
prob getting up and walking the next day or anything. So no worries--
they'll take good care of you.

I got mine the next day after surgery and I had just finished 3 days
before. The doctors and nurses (I had to ask for pads, since I wasn't
prepared) told me this is very common because of the trauma of surgery. I
am just under 3 weeks post op and have had my period on and off since I
have been home. I called my OBG and they said it was normal, but to make
sure I take Iron (chewable form is not so bad.)

First off, I am also anemic (spelling) and secondly I too was on my period
at the time of surgery. I never even thought about it, wore a tampon into
the OR room, never even mentioned it to my doctor. Afterwards in my room
the nurse was helping me up to walk and I mentioned that I had a tampon in
that I might need to replace. She was surprised, and thought they might
have taken it out during surgery (when they placed the catheter.) I guess
my surgeon didn't care because he left it. I had no problems at all with my
blood levels, or my cycle. I do know that I've heard several women say that
having surgery can cause them to spontaneously start their cycle, so you'd
think you could bleed heavier if already on it, I'm not sure though. Best
thing to do is alert your surgeon to it, they've dealt with it before, I'm
certain!
