Question:
Three weeks out lap rny and having a difficult time with getting my
water and protein. I can barely get one 16 oz water (liquid) in per day. I have tried so many protein drinks and have not found a protein drink I can tolerate. I know I can associate this to how tired and run down I fell. Does anyone have any so help for me or is this normal? — MadameSiewe (posted on October 27, 2008)

It's so hard the first few months...but you have got to try to get down
more water and definitely more protein. I had the same trouble my first
few months...Before surgery I tolerated several whey protein powders and
stocked up on my favs, only to find I wasted hundreds of dollars on this
stuff and became lactose intolerant and could not stand the smell or flavor
of whey ever again! I still gag just smelling whey! Still I used one
flavorless powder I got from GNC in soups and jellos and broths...but only
a little...I could tolerate just a little but figured it was better than
nothing! But...I was able to get in sips of Isopure (carb free ones!) It
was expensive for a few months...but it was worth it for that short
time.(about 3 months) Plus I could carry around the bottle and sip it when
I thought about it...It was the only whey protein supp I found that was
very high quality and didn't make me ill. I liked the apple and the alpine
punch. I recently just bought a few for days I am too busy too stop work
and get lunch! Plus they are liquid so you know you are getting in some of
you liquid amts too! They are seriosly expensive here in the Wash DC
area...but when you use that as a meal it's worth it for the health and the
enregy you get and it's a short time before you can eat enough to sustain
you...The only difference I had was that i was not tired at all...I had so
much energy after surgery I hardly knew what to do with myself! Hope you
are taking all your vits daily too! I think some of this is very normal,
initially...because surgery is just very stressful on the body and for
many, healing can take a while ...but I wouldn't get too comfy in that
thought...and look into it...because as you lose weight you should begin to
feel much more energetic...Don't be afraid to call your surgeon's office
and see if they have suggestions! Protein helps you heal faster too! So
you have got to keep trying to find a source that you can tolerate until
you can eat more! Good luck!

Try taking a good "liquid" vitamin / mineral supplement like
VEMMA. It will increase your energy level and has 1000 IU vitamin D3,very
important for calcium absorption. Go to www.TrySomeVemma.com

Don't get discouraged....sip your liquids throughout the day. And as for
the tired feeling, it does have somewhat to do with the restricted diet but
also you went through a major surgery even though it was done by lap. I
had the same and it took several weeks to feel like I was making progress.
Don't forget to move around also to make sure your muscles don't get lazy.
Hang in there!!!

I had trouble with the liquid and protein drink also. I am so sick of
chocolate. The vanilla SF Carnation Instant Breakfast isn't too bad. I am
just starting pureed food so I only have to supplement now. I have little
2 oz cups and I put in 2 oz of water or crystal light and I drink one every
15 minutes. It is easier to get the water that way for me.
Don't give up... I think most of us have been through it.

Hi! You will feel "draggy" for a while. Your body is going
through withdrawls of carbs and caffeine. Do your best to find alternatives
for protein. yes, they are not the tasty things we are used to, but right
now you have to fuel your body and it will take a while to find a drink
that is not "too bad". I'd turn to your local bariatric support
group to see what other newbies are finding that's tolerable! -Darlene

Hi Pamela, Well first off congrats on the surgery!! I had the same problem,
you have no drive to keep drinking, you feel
like you are drowning in water, the first thing I did is by some 100%
juice, and water it down fill up your glass with ice and our 1/2 the juice
in and 1/2 water, or whatever you like, I am not sure what stage you are in
with eating, but yogurt, eggs, and cheese were soft enough for me to eat
and get my protein in. I also used unjury (Unjury.com) it's a little pricey
but you can add it to anything puddings, yogurt, or make a shake with it,
it's 20 grams of protein per scoop, and it also has other vitamins in it,
again I fill a 16oz shaker with ice, milk and unjury, and would drink that
twice a day, then get my other protein in the other way with food. Then I
would have water, or whatever to drink always next to me, so I would
remeber to drink. Maybe ask your doc, or dietician if they have some
samples you can try , there are a couple of good ones out there. I know I
hated wasted the money on something I couln't handle, then you get
completely turned off, so but try to keep up with those fluids, and try to
get your protein in if it be by food or protein supplement. Don't get
discourged! I hope this helps! keep in touch, and let me know how you are
doing! Have a great day! Lisa

As they've said... it will get better. I also had a really hard time with
liquids at first. But after awhile I find I'm able to get in the required
amount. This had me bummed out for awhile because I used to drink lots of
water constantly! As for the protein, I also use the Unjury. My fave is
the chocolate. I mix a scoop into an 8oz glass of milk every morning to
get the day started. Good luck to you!
