Question:
motion sickness meds.
I am leaving for an 8 day cruise soon and was wondering if I'm allowed to take the seasick meds they give you on the ship. Or do I need special meds. — Carol S. (posted on July 23, 2006)

Carol, I would think you could take them, just remember that the absoprtion
rate may be different, and they can dry you out a little so increase your
fluids a little. Have a great cruise!!!

I agree with the first poster. They have Scopalamine patches to be worn
behind your ear their prescription med so you don't have to worry about
taking stuff orally. Hope this helps. Have a safe trip:)

Talk to your doctor and have a backup plan. I'm 6 weeks post and have had
horrible times getting used to my meds that I used to take preop. I have
had to go to mostly liquid versions of them because I can't tollerate the
tablets. I'm on a liquid antidepressant now, and the only solid one I can
take is my chewable vitamin. I was really sick because of these issues, and
I'd hate to see you have a horrible trip because of it!
Your surgeon or family doctor should be able to help you with this!

Carol,
I've been on two cruises and speak from experience. DON'T take the ships
seasickness medications! They will make you go to sleep and give you a
drunk feeling which is not a fun way to spend your cruise! Instead, call
your pcp now and ask for the nurse. Tell her you are taking a cruise and
ask for a prescription for Transderm. It is a little round patch that goes
behind your ear and contains medicine. You can wear the patch for 2-3 days
at a time, so tell her the length of your cruise so they can call in the
right amount to your pharmacy. IT WORKS GREAT! ~Julie

I had my RNY in May of '04 and went on a cruise the following October. I
used the motion sickness patches with great success. The only side effect I
noticed was slightly blurred vision. I purchased dramamine but was afraid
it wouldn't work or would make me so sleepy that I wouldn't enjoy my
vacation. That's why I decided to try the behind-the-ear patch. I would
discuss this issue with your physician, but there are treatments available.
Have a great vacation and best wishes for health and happiness.

I think you're supposed to bring your own.... but especially with your
special requirements, I'd deal with the issue before hand by talking with
surgeon or pcp.
Keep in mind that if you are sea sick and vomiting, a pill may not be the
best way to go. The patch sounds like a great idea. If not, Zofran is a
anti-nausea med that makes a melt in your mouth tab--no drinking required.
And you can also get a variety of meds in suppository form. Have you been
on a cruise before? Have fun!

Call and ask your doctor about it.

My doctor gave me Scopalamine patches to use just before and right after
surgery to help control nausea - I bet they would be great for your trip!
Just a little patch behind your ear! Have a great trip! ~Monica~

Motion sickness is a problem for everyone in my family. I keep a supply of
ginger capsules (you can get it at any health food store and sometimes can
find them at the drug store). For a cruise I would start taking one every
4 to 6 hours the day before your cruise and continue to take them during
your cruise. If you need to you can increase the dose to 2 capsules. They
work GREAT!! Take some back up over the counter motion sick meds just in
case, but everyone in my family has had wonderful results with the Ginger.
