Question:
Anyone been denied for having hypothyrodism????? Little nervous.....
I have hypothyrodism and I am on Levoxyl- (I have been for a year now) but I just went and had my bloodwork done for pre-op and when I went to see my doctor he said it was high again so he increased my dosage on my Levoxyl. I was just wondering if anyones surgery was put off because of this? My surgery date is July 6th and I don't want anything to stop me. Any information you can give me will be very helpful- thank you so much..... KARI B. — huntersavage (posted on May 21, 2006)

Kari, all I can say is good luck with it. I have been told by several
people that a lot of doctors won't do it because the weight is caused by a
medical problem, not over eating. I have a neighbor that has the same
condition so I did some asking around for her. The gastric bypass is to
help control teh amount you eat and if your weight is not from eating too
much then you could lose weight, but its not going to stay off. I hope it
works out for you, maybe you will find one that will do it.

I have the same problem and they didn't delay my surgery. It should be
alright. I have a whole score of things wrong with me but it didn't stop
the surgery however I had extra tests I had to take.

I had hypothyrodism and was on Levoxyl as well. In fact I gained 10lbs
before my surgery which they were upset about, but still did my surgery on
March 1st of this year and to date I have lost 64lbs! Also, I no longer
need to take the Levoxyl so hopefully it will do the same for you! GOOD
LUCK!!

Hypothyroidism shouldn't be a problem as long as your thyroid levels are
normal with medication. Many women are hypothyroid ... Also, I've only
gained weight since being diagnosed, and I take my medication
RELIGIOUSLY!!! Make sure you take your meds and get bloodwork regularly.

I'm 2 yrs + PO RNY, had Graves Disease and have been on Levoxyl 12 yrs
pre-op and now my dosage has increased due to the malabsorbation
issues.....everything seems fine with my bloodwork, but this wasn't the
case the first year. I managed to lose the bulk of my weight in the first 8
months, so I guess I've been successful. Is hypothyrodism the same as
Graves? I think it is, but not 100% sure. I would make sure you can get
your meds stabilized before pursing the gastric bypass.....unless your
having Lapband, which doesn't interfere with malabsorption. Good luck!

I am posting just in case anyone else has a question about this. I have
thryoid cancer, and had a total thyroidectomy. Am on synthroid for
hypothyroidism and HAVE been approved for the surgery.
