Well your doctor should tell you about the procedure, answer any questions
you have, get a detailed history from you and tell you what consults or
things you have to do before you can have the surgery. Some doctors want you
to lose a certain amount of weight first.

My surgeon asked me what type of surgery did I want. I was undecided at
that time so he told me the pros & cons of both based on my medical
history; like I had pretty bad hip joint pain and was a regular NSAID user.
He made it clear that with RNY that type of med would be out of the
question whereas with a lapband you could still take it. So I'm sure your
doctor will do something similar with you so you can make an informed
decision. He will probably tell you about the various surgeries he performs
and provide his opinions on what he thinks will work best for your
situation. Ultimately it's your choice unless there is a clear cut medical
issue preventing you from having one type over another. I think an
important question is how long has he been performing bariatric surgery,
how many of each type and has he had an deaths occur. They should not be
put off by these questions. Some states even offer online State Medical
Board searches to see if your doctor has had any negative situations that
impacted his medical license. I seem to remember there was a list here on
OH too. Maybe on the main page. Good Luck!
