Question:
Are "Yellow Corn Taco Shells" a big NO NO? I am 2 months out of RNY.

And I am trying to start to add some new things here and there. Thanks    — twinsplusone (posted on November 25, 2008)

No sure what your instructions are but I was told no form of bread at all so it would be a big no. The taco shell fills your pouch quickly not allowing enough room for the protein. So have the taco filling with sour cream and taco sauce. Eat with a fork. I serve it on avocado and tomato like a salad.

All docs are different I was told to try anything, cause some foods have some things in them we need, I am 4 months out -96 lbs RNY I have tried the shells sometime ok other times not, usually can not finish 1. I eat it with the protein and all the goodies to make sure it is not dry. Its up to you I have tried it with no problems if your doc said no then? good luck. Tammi

Instead of the taco shells, you could try Baked Tostitos Scoops. They are great! Baked not fried, and you can eat a few of them to scoop up the goodies!

I also enjoy the scoops. I put rotissary chicken and cheese, pop them in the oven until the cheese melts, then a dab of sour cream. I usually can only eat 3 before I am full. Try it for something new. Tracy

I had 2 chips 6 months after surgery. It did not go well. I got sick and dumping is no fun. Stay away from them for a while. Your pouch needs time to heal and your body will react different after any wls. Good luck.

Corn tortillas are high in complex carbs which is better than being a simple carb...Grains have important nutrients in them and I would NEVER (and I am one who says never says never...LOL) give up nutrition just because some surgeon wants good weight loss statistics. The best absorbed vitamins come from the source...FOOD and a variety of food insures that you are getting proper aminos and vits and minerals that are not found in protein alone...

My instructions said no bread, pasta, rice or tortillas for at least 6 months. A corn taco shell is still a tortilla. So I would say NO!!!

Carbs are the enemy and the addiction we have to them is the reason most of us needed this surgery in the first place, because we couldn't say not to them on our own. I say, just say not. I think your surgeon meant try adding new proteins and veggies and see what you can tolerate. Best of luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
