I am constantly amazed that doctors who do these surgeries don't give their patients this info, or a book with this info before surgery, or why the patient wouldn't ask this of the surgeon, but according to my Barix Doctor, 3 weeks on full liquids, 2 on pureed, 1 on soft food and then, very carefully regular food. Do some research and it will be explained more fully than this answer. That is just a rule of thumb. Good luck. Lyn

I'm surprised your nutritionist and surgeon didn't go over this with you in advance. Mine gave me papers on everything, plus a class plus many other appointments and movies all talking about what and when to eat. With ths said, not all WLS centers are exactly the same, but generally the soft foods start after 2 weeks....before this just liquids and super-pureed things. However I've heard that some people start with soft food in the very beginning. If I were you I'd give a call to the nutritionist at your WLS center and get the specifics from her. GOod luck

My surgeon allowed soft foods at 10 days, but each surgeon is different.

My doctor had me on it three weeks out.I know my friends doctor did let her go to soft food for 2 months. I would see what your doctor says. Annette

I agree with Lyn, what kind of paperwork did your nutritionist give you at your last visit? Were you given post op instructions when you were discharged at the hospital. I am almost 2 years out and have an actual file folder FULL of paperwork and information I was given for both pre and post op life. It all left very few questions to the imagination. I had LapBand and it sounds like you had RNY, so, our post op eating plan was different. I would strongly encourage you to have a visit asap and get the appropriate information with exactly what you are supposed to do and when. I don't mean to sound negative in any way, and I know the lack of info is not your fault, it just never ceases to amaze me that a surgeon would be willing to cut you open, change your life forever and you are having to ask questions about what you are supposed to be eating on this forum. This is great place for information but shouldn't be the first. Good luck to you and welcome to the loser's bench, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

Well my doctor did tell me to start soft foods week2, but I did not know if he meant after week 2 or right at week 2, when I tried to call the center the doctor or his pa was unavailable. I was just wondering what everyone else has done so I can just have a general idea until he gets back with me. I was very surprised that I can hold down 2% milk mixed in with the carnation breakfast. It was a relief to drink that.

I was on clear liquids for 1 week and then 2 weeks of full liquids. After that i was able to eat soft foods.

I haven't had wls yet...BUT...did attend the Nutrition Class 2 weeks ago and we were specifically told SKIM or 1% milk and to make sure the Carnation Breakfast drink was Sugar Free. So was surprised when you mentioned the 2% milk... Just Curious...??

I am sending you some UPDATED information after reading instructions I read from your hospital...PLEASE do some research on your own...AWAY from the info provided at your hospital for your own safety and health especially on Vitamins and supplements. At first I thought that you just weren't paying attention to your surgeon...and I now realise your surgeon is only knowledgeable (at this time) in the surgery aspect of his patients and not so much...AT ALL...in their aftercare. So I beg you to please learn as much as you can about your health...ASAP!!!! Especially vitamins... You need to make certain that if you are taking a chewable multi vitamin, that it is an ADULT chewable or liquid...You need to throw away the calcium carbonate that your hospital suggests and get CALCIUM CITRATE with Vit D3 and magnesium. You need to throw away the Time released Iron if you have that and get on Tender Iron (Do not use Iron salts) IRON is NOT a friendly vitamin....Carbonyl Iron is and take any iron you decide to take with VIT C as ascorbic acid to help absorb the iron. Carbonyl Iron is very friendly and highly absorbed (with the vit c)... Any vitamins, tablets, pills meds..etc that are in time released form will NEVER be absorbed as they are designed for people with a real stomach and stomach acid and the first part of the small intestines which RNYers do not have or are bypassed. B-12 as sublingual or spray or shots! Do some research...Please if you ask your doc for this info compare his suggestions online or ask here on OH.....Do the research yourself and become an advocate for you own health and safety! You are the only one who truly cares about you...So PLEASE take care of yourself. As for eating...Your hospital "suggests" liquids for a month...And very soft food after week 4....This is only a "suggestion". My surgeon and nutrionist never did an all liquid diet....I ate soft foods the day after surgery...Many docs now "suggest" soft food after 2 weeks...You decide what you can handle as long as you get in mostly protein...Your hospital also suggests your drinks contain no more than 20-25 g of sugar....As a grad 4 1/2 years PO...I suggest you DO NOT DRINK ANY SUGAR drinks...Not now....Not ever. A tiny bit of natural sugar is normal...Fruits have sugar in them...Milk has sugar in it...But to drink added sugar drinks is not a good suggestion. I am not a doctor, surgeon or nutritionist...I'm just a regular RNY housewife 4 1/2 years post op who has had some vitamin problems with the RIGHT vitamins and I just do not want to see you in harms way when it could be avoided with a little knowledge and updated "suggestions".....Good luck....

I am one week out and went to my Dr. and was told to start soft foods. But I have been able to tolerate everything I want to eat but have been very limited with size portions. I also recommend to call you Dr office. But if you doanlt want to just start with the samll things like scramble eggs and mash potatoes.
