Question:
Summer cook outs and BBQ sauce
I am not yet banded. I am also considering the gastric sleeve. My question is this...now that the nice weather is breaking how should I handle the BBQ food? Will the burnt crust make me PB? I understand from the point of view of calories not to eat the BBQ sauce but what can I do if I attend a cook out and all the food is already cooked? For example I was a friends helping with yard work and as a thank you she treated us to a cook out where she made BBQ ribs! In trying to pratice I ate slow and chewed very well but it got me to thinking how would I handle the situation next summer after my surgery? — chell1957 (posted on April 21, 2008)

I always bring my boneless chicken breast and either have it already made
or have them just put it on the grill after you have the surgery ppl will
understand that you can't eat that stuff right now or they will respect you
and not put bbq sauce on your piece hugs dawn

I had lap-band last September and I can tell you that it really won't
matter much, because you won't be able to eat but one or two bites of
barbaqued food. I agree with the other post, I would bring my own food
also if you think you are going to have issues with it. When it comes to
ribs and meat, you really won't be able to have much of it. That is why
salads and softer foods are better for you. I have lost 70 lbs in 7 months
and am now pregnant so I feel you will enjoy just the few bites you are
going to be able to take!!!

I had Gastric bypass on 3/3/08.Was 253lbs-now 220lbs. I have found that my
body is not textbook or exact in any way.Sometimes I do great with
food, sometimes I stray just a bit from my normal routine and have a few
bites off a rib.The sauce itself would probably make it go down easier, but
it could give heartburn due to the vinigar that is in it.You'll see that
since you can only have a few bites anyway-it won't matter much.By the
way-it is soooo great that you are already practicing eating slowly and pea
size bites before you do the surgery. That mind thing that tells us we can
eat all that is on our plate can really mess with you after surgery. It has
me.I learned quickly that saucers were my plates. The more you prepare
mentally for this, the more likely you will follow through with yopur
goals.Best Wishes.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and support. Way back when I was on the
Meridian diet pill, I used to make my own food and take along with me. So I
think this will be no different for me.

I agree with what the others have said.
I personally wasn't told NOT to eat bbq sauce. Besides it's not like there
is that much on what little bits you will be able to eat. Might as well
enjoy yourself...remember everything in moderation.
I had my bypass 3 months ago and I've lost 60 lbs. I made bbq ribs last
night and I ate one. It might have had a teaspoon of bbq sauce on it. See
what I'm talking about?
And it doesn't bother my stomach at all.
Life doesn't stop just because you have WLS. We adjust to the demands of
our new life and one thing I've noticed is that most people don't notice or
care what you're eating or not eating.

I just ate spare ribs with barbeque sauce and they were delicious...But
when I got home and logged my food in my journal and looked upt he
calories...OMIGOD!!!! They are loaded with both fat and calories and not
that great a source of protein. You'd be better off bringing a little
something of your own and beware that barbeques usually consits of ALL THE
No-no's post op...Go to a barbeque a few years post op and you realised why
americans are so fat. They are a feast of bad food...chips, potato salads,
sauces and white bread buns, creamy, sugary desserts...Your best bet is to
bring a dish you can eat...and stay away from the bread and potatos...Eat
in moderation and allow this as you cheat day for the week and make it up
with a healthier week and good exercise...That is what I do on those
weekends and it all balances out. If you have a barbeque...set a
trend...serve chicken kabobs with fresh veggies, pinto and black beans in a
vinegarette, fruit salad with greek yogurt, turkey burgers on whole wheat,
pita chips and hummus or whole grain tortilla chips and salsa and guacamole
dip and pulled pork shoulder (add your own barbeque sauce (this way you
don't have to have any if you don't want it)....You can do this for life
without the loss of good food...these food choices are lower in fat and
carbs and taste wonderful! People enjoy the change too. Doesn't hurt to
have a few greasy burgers and hot dogs for the kiddies since they hate
anything healthy.

i never go anywhere with out a plan! i either make sure there will be
something i can eat or better yet i take something special that i can
eat.usually everyone else is thrilled to see what i bring .that way i am
not left on my own.above all don't expect others to be responsible for what
u do or dont do.it is your choice to be prepared .i admire you for thinking
and asking in advance.

I agree with Stacie, it really won't matter much since you will probably
only be able to eat a very tiny bit and then you will be full. I had the
band for a year and then switched to RNY bypass. Eat a little chicken or
have a little bit of burger without the bun, gotta remember to get that
protein in first since you will probably only be able to eat a very small
amount of food. Don't worry though, you will be so full after eating that
little bit you will fell like you ate the whole chicken, LOL. Best of luck.

Honestly? I'd eat my protein before attending the function. As a single
adoptive mother, with MANY kids parties to attend, with LOTS of
"No-No" food options, I just eat my grilled chicken before I
leave so that, at the event, I'm not hungry & therefore, not tempted.
Sure, Ruby will share a bite of her cake or something with me, and a bite
is ok for now & we'll see how that goes AFTER my surgery. (RNY on
5-28-08) After that I'll still practice what I preach. Eat prior to the
event, but still go & socialize & have fun, just without all the
temptations. Plus, I find, especially with a large Italian family, that
food is EVERYWHERE, even if there is NOT an occasion. So, same deal. I
always eat MY kind of food prior to joining the masses & then enjoy
some salad, every get together ALWAYS has a SALAD!
=)
Good luck to you!

I'm not sure you'll be eating ribs. I couldn't after my band.No pulled pork
either. It's just too tough. I mostly eat burgers or filet mignon. It's such
a sacrifice (LOL). You do not have a restriction with sugars/fats with the
band either (they are to be used in moderation or avoided), but they won't
make you sick. Good luck

Well I ahve to agree with everyone else...you will eat such a small amount
that it won't hurt. I would limit the amount of Bar-B-Q sauce that I eat.
It may be high in sugars. Chew your meat good and you will be fine! Good
protein intake!!!
Enjoy!!!!!

I agree with everyone else. Remember, you are number one. Do what is best
for you. I had my RNY 6 years ago and I still can't eat Barbeque and I am
from Texas! Stick with chicken. You should stay away from the sauce just
because it is very high in calorie and has minimal nutritional value. One
of the things that has really made a difference in my life is that I had to
change my thinking about eating. If you were allergic to Barbeque we
wouldn't even be having this conversation! I think of sugar as poison to
me. I read labels on EVERYTHING. Once you get in the habit it just becomes
natural. My husband still doesn't understand why I take so long at the
grocery store, it takes a while to read all those labels!! Good luck! You
can do it!!

Thank you all so much for all the answers. U are all correct. And yes I
need to act as if I have a SERIOUS allergy to some foods once I have my
surgery. U all have been most helpful.
