Question:
Wife had Lap RYN 3 1/2 weeks ago and has only lost 20lbs.

Wife had Lap RYN 3 1/2 weeks ago and has only lost 20lbs. Has anyone else had problems with loosing right after surgery. She does not over eat and does drink no calorie fluids. Any suggestions would be helpful.    — JeffMoats (posted on September 1, 2007)

aceually she is a little ahead of the curve. I had surgery August 7th and I am at 16 pounds. My surgeon told me 20 lbs is the optimum for 1 month. She doesn't need to go any faster. Make sure she has her B12 and vitimins and iron and calcium. Losing at that rate she will start losing her hair if she dosen't take her suppliments and stay around 800 calories. She needs upwards of 60 grams of protein as well. Congratulations to her. Good luck.

The same thing is happening to me. I was told that if you are heavier you lose more, its a percent of your body weight, I am 8 weeks post op 7-11 an dhave only lost 38 lbs.. and my doctor says its good.. So just keep it up and it does come off.. Good luck..

you need to remember that lapband is much slower than rny....she is actually doing great for the timeframe. I know someone who had lapband in mid feb and she is down 42 lbs. the first month shows the biggest loss of weight. the most important thing your wife can do now is keep drinking her water, getting in the protein and staying away from sugars and carbs. she should be walking alot and once the doctor gives clearance, start doing other forms of exercise. too rapid a weight loss isn't healthy. i think she's right on target or even a little ahead of the game!

ONLY 20 Pounds?? I'd say that's pretty good! Tell her I said congratulations on the tremendous weight loss so far.

What, are you kidding me? 20 lbs. is fantastic! And in only 3 and 1/2 weeks?? Can you remember, prior to her surgery, the last time she lost so much weight in so short a time? And this time, hopefully, it will stay off. Encourage her and support her and tell her to keep up the good work! If you will keep an eye on this forum, you will see that is an extremely good weight loss for the time period. Lynn W.

If you consider the normal 1-2 pounds/week rule for a "normal" person that's only 6 pounds. In "bariatric surgery rules" she's doing great IMHO. If you have concerns, though, call her surgeon. God Bless. Terri aka Tinky PO Dec 2003 RnY proximal down 120+ (even I've stopped counting lol)

TWENTY POUNDS in 3-1/2 weeks!! That's SUPER. I don't understand why you think there is a problem. Tell her to keep up the good work.

My wife is comparing her weight loss to when I had my surgery. I am 1 1/2 years post op and I lost 26 1/2 pounds in the first ten days. She is just a little dissapointed that she hasn't lost that much so far. We both had RNY bypass done laproscopicly.

Jeff, It's a known fact that men lose weight faster than women, and you may have had more weight to lose than your wife, which would make it "seem" like you were having greater success. She is doing AWESOME! Give her lots of praise and encouragement, and tell her to focus on getting in all her protein and water - the weight is guarenteeded to come off. Hide the scale, and focus on healthy eatting. Don't let her try to compete with you, have her listen to her own body. She WILL succeed at this, and obviously already is! Best of luck to you both!

My gosh, as the other poster said, men do lose a lot faster than women. Please don't compare you two. She is on track for a woman. Give her some credit. She is doing great, as you did too.
