No, not in the next life, but in this one, YEP! You really don't have to if your Protein intake is good each week -but try something like ISOPURE no carb Protein Powder. It costs a bit more but tastes excellent with cold non fat milk & it has zero sugar! So the answer is NO -but I intend to, at least every other day, just like it's a SUPPLEMENT -which it is, PROTEIN needed with your new inside plumbing system.

Hi... Like Michael said, you don't have to if you are getting enough protein in. At the beginning, you will have to do the shakes to get the protein in, but once you start eating meat, tofu, etc, then you can cut back on them... There are a couple of places for recipes... one is on this site = www.obesityhelp.com/forums/recipe/ www.bariatriceating.com "Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery" by Patt Levine (cookbook) Any high protein, low carb recipes... nothing over 3-5g of sugar per serving.... good luck hunting.....

Hi Barbara- No you don't have to be on shakes, My Doc did not believe in them. I started them after the first year. If you eat mostly protein & get enough out of your food you will not need to supplement with the shakes. Use WHEY protein not only does it taste better than most, it is what our bodies will hang on to. Congrats on your surgery & you wont regret it. I am 3 yrs out & would do it again in a heart beat.

I agree with the first three and disagree with Marilyn. If you want to be healthy you need to get in the protein 80+ grams per day there is no way you will be able to eat it all. I would say that you will be supplementing with protein drinks the rest of you life. Go to bariatriceating.com, it is a great site. They have a board as well.

Per my nutritionist, "it is recommended to supplement protein, AT LEAST OCCASIONALLY, for the rest of your life due to your permanently reduced ability to abosorb protein from food." Since so many surgeons and nutritionists are different, check with YOUR surgeon, and or YOUR nutritionist, as there might be a certain regime they use to make everything balance. Good luck!

I'm 12 years out. I have a more radical form of RNY, so MUST do some protein shakes daily, but I prefer to do more. They help me with sugar cravings and volume control, and I need both again. The honeymoon was over a long, long time ago. I use whey with water, only. No milk, no juice, ever, due to the high sugar content. Just a dab of sugar and I am a raging eating machine. Better to glug another protein than to put my fingers in the cookie jar, if you know what I mean.
