Question:
I notice a lot of you eat

I would think that these two foods would cause a lot of gas, especially on your new stomachs...or would cause heartburn...Does anyone have any problems with these foods? Thank You Nancy P    — NANCY P. (posted on August 31, 2002)

Well I am the moderator who approved this it said refried beans or wendys chili. I guess we have a bug:( <P> In any case I like wendys chili and it never caused a problem. For me acid reflux was gone so heartburn is a thing of the past. I am a bit gassier than pre op, but I found eating fresh fruit keeps things moving and the gas is about the same as pre op now. I like grapefruit with lots of Splenda and grapes. Although I do eat other fruit.

I LIVED on Wendy's chili for about 3 months! It's very easy to chew up and tastes yummy........unless you live on it for 3 months! LOL

For me, I keep dumping on refried beans. I don't know if it is the fat or what, but it sucks. The pintos and cheese from Taco Bell don't make me dump, which is weird. It only seems to be restaurant refried beans. Sucks, cause I am really sick of chicken.

I made a promise to myself that I would stay away from fast food places since I spent a lot of time each day using drive thrus... so I don't do Wendy's... but I do eat refried beans, fat free... with lots of no fat cheddar cheese... and a tiny bit of raspberry salsa... it was great when I was eating pureed and soft food.. and I still like them.. you're getting good protein. I did not have any problem with them as far as gas goes... if you do, I'd suggest beano.

I eat the Wendy's chili a lot - a small chili will last me 2-3 meals and a large one will last me 3-4. Low fat, acceptable carbs (to me) and a decent amount of protein. No problems with excessive gas (at least no more than usual *G*) and the peppers & onions in the chili have had no effect on me. I've never been one for heartburn - either pre-op or post-op.

Hey Jennifer: you know why restaurant refried beans probably make you dump? Many restaurants use either lard or butter in their refried beans. It's the fat! Taco Bell fat free refried beans (canned for use at home) are great. Beans cause gas when they aren't cooked properly, but those that are rinsed and well cooked should be more easily digested.

I am as surprised as you about these foods. I am ten months post op. Preop, I avoided these foods because they were gassy and I didn't like the taste of them. Now, I eat them all of the time! When someone wants a restaurant sugestion, I always opt for Mexican, since my old favorites, Italian and Chinese don't sit right any more. These high protein foods just seem to work really well post op.
