I have heard many times that you should wait at least 6 months before
trying alcohol. I also advise you to skip the margarita and drink wine
instead. Depends on your type of surgery I guess. Good luck.

With the RNY surgery I understood that we are never to drink alcohol.

My surgeon told us no alcohol until after one year post op.

I would recommend you wait a year, until you are out of the
"honeymoon" period of the GBS. I'm a year and 1/2 out and I can
handle a beer or some daiquiris, but sometimes if I catch it wrong or on an
empty stomach, I get cramps that are as painful as a gunshot wound. (I
know) Trust me, it almost made me swear off of anything stronger than
water. Please be careful.

My surgeon said "No alcohol". Meaning ever.

alcohol effects your body differantly after surgery and most surgeons say
not to drink.
People who were ok with drinking before have become alcoholics. So if you
decide to drink use caution. It may hit you harder than you expect.
When you alter your eating it is easy to use something else to fill the
void. also alcohol is loaded with calories and can put the weight back on
you.

It's unrealistic to think that we will never drink alcohol again after
having WLS. However, beer and sugary drinks are not on the list. I've been
told that wine is alright. Moderation is the key.

My surgeon recommended waiting a year post op. I have cheated and had small
amounts of alcohol since 6 months post op. When I say small amounts -- one
drink every month to six weeks.

If you want to defeat the purpose of receiving your weight loss surgery and
turn to gaining weight, go ahead and drink alcohol. Most all liquors are
full of sugars and beer is total carbs. If your had RNY, DS, GS - remember
one drink is equal to a whole case. Don't be driving yourself.

Most liquors like vodka or tequila are sugar free and carb free and range
from 65-98 calories per shot. I'm not much of a drinker, but on
"special occasions" I certainly think we are "entitled"
as long as we are responsible and are not drinking and driving, and drink
in moderation and are aware that the affects of alcohol are stronger in a
WLS patient. On New Year's (which I was 6 months post-op),I had two very
tasty drinks. I put a shot of tequila, one sleeve of Crystal Light Sunrise
Orange, and a few tablespoons of lime juice in a blender with ice and made
a frozen WHATEVER, lol ..... two drinks gave me a nice buzz ..... I was
home, safe, not driving, and calorie consumption was less than 200
calories. Yes, it was "empty" calories; however, it went toward
my liquid intake .... giggles!!!! WLS surgery isn't supposed to make us
boring and like hermits. If an occasional event calls for a little alcohol,
just use your head, and use low calorie, low sugar and low carb choices.
