Question:
URGENT!!! Please help
I know this question has been asked before but I am too sick to look it up. I've had the worst sinus infection for 3 weeks now, my family doctor gave me an antibiotic and prednisone. I take Nexium daily because of stomach issues. My question is, can I take the prednisone? She gave me 18 pills that I am to take over a 9 day period. I'd greatly appreciate your help in this manner. — PAWLLA L. (posted on July 3, 2009)

I know we aren't supposed to take prednisone (steroids) or nsaids.
However, you REALLY need to ask your doctor. From what I understand,
sometimes the benefits might outweigh the risks. Again...I AM NOT SURE
about this. Only your doctor can know.
Perhaps they could give you an alternative to the prednisone if you ask
your primary care doctor and explain that you aren't supposed to be on
steroids.
Wish I could be more help but, unfortunately, I do not have that medical
degree that I've always dreamed of.
Good luck and feel better soon!

I don't think were supposed to take NSAIDS.. But I would see if maybe your
doctor could just give you a steroid shot. I had that done to me when I
told my doc that I couldn't take NSAIDS. Plus it works faster... Good luck

Ok, NSAID's stands for non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs and prednisone
is a steroid....if the Dr that ordered them is aware of your surgery, then
she or he should know what drugs to use. If after 3 weeks you are not
clear on antibiotics maybe you need a different one?? Soetimes they are
viral and antibiotics don't help. Have you had a fever? Good luck to you
and I hope you feel better! Ana Villa, RN

Another RN's take on this question. I don't think that prednisone is going
to adversely affect you. It is the NSAIDS like ibuprofen, aleve, motrin,
etc that will upset your stomach. A 9 day stint of steroids shouldn't hurt
you. It is considered a dose pack where you gradually wean down off the
steroid until you are done. It should help out the inflammation caused by
the infection. Be aware that most antibiotics can cause upset stomach so
try to take them with food. Again, if your doctor is aware of your gastric
procedure, he would not have prescribed this if he thought it was
detrimental to you.
Hope this helps.

You should be able to take prednisone but eat a small amount of food or sip
on a protein drink when you take it. This drug can cause a stomach ache but
your Nexium may keep you from have discomfort.I have taken it before and
needed to take food with it but everyone is different

Does she know you are a gastric by-pass patient? Call your bariatric
center and make sure. My Doctor okay Psudoephedrine. You have to get it
behind the counter as it is controlled, but with no prescription. It is
the best at relieving the pressure in your head. Feel better.

I had the GRDS procedure, one year ago. I take Prednisone daily for
Rheumatoid Arthritis, and I am just fine. My doctor knew going in I had to
take it, and said it was not a problem.

I used to be plagued with sinus infections lasting 4-5 months and the
strongest antibiotics would give me a little relief but the infection never
completely went away. I also USED to have allergies. I started using luke
warm water mixed with 1 t baking soda, 2 t peroxide and 1 T salt. I put
mixture in a tea pot and pour it into one nostril while tilting my head
sideways over the bathroom sink and letting the mixture drain out of the
opposite nostril...it rinses out all that infection..its a miracle. I
havent had a sinus infection for 3 years now. If you think about it..it
makes sense..when we have an infection on our skin, we cleanse the area to
get rid of the infection. I hope this helps.
