Question:
Depo-Provera after RNY?

Does anyone know if I can stay on the Depo-Provera shot for birth control after my RNY? I sure hope so!    — Teresa R. (posted on February 17, 2009)

I was on before and after surgery. My gyno is having me change to an IUD becuz she's worried my calcium (even though I take a ton) is not making it my bones at levels she is comfortable with. The way she explained it was - the calcium takes a truck to the fwy to your bones. if you've been on depo a long time and after RNY surgery - the fwy might be closed at a few exits so it's not getting to all of the exits it should be. I am finishing my last 3 month depo and switching to IUD - good for 5 years. But your depo should be fine. Was for me.

My question is why would you want to. I am an ob/gyn nurse and depo is one of the worst. It robs your body of extreme amounts of calcium and with the rny you are not going to absorb as much anyway. It is a 2 hormone shot (tricks your body into thinking you are preg) so lots of mood swings, weight gain. No one should take it for longer than a 2 year period. They have new and better options ie the Mirena IUD and the Implanon( and small implanted good for 3 years) much better and safer options for someone with a RNY hope this helps

I have been on depo for the last 12 years and I am getting ready to have lap rny. Docs said it should be fine. I cannot use bc pill due to other health problems and cannot use IUDs or implants because I have lupus. Everyone is different, but see if your doc will let you get DEXA (bone scans) periodically to check your bone density. Good luck with everything.

Hello! I have been on a depo shot off and on for several years - prior to my lap RNY (Sept 2006) and afterwards. I had a bone density scan 2 months ago and it was fine. I also keep up my blood work which is all in check (I do take my vitamins faithfully). My ob/gyn said no issue with continuing taking the depo shot. I have been at goal weight since December of 2007 (starting weight 350 with BMI of 53- now 145 with a BMI of 22). I do not experience weight gain with the depo shot since I had my RNY. I doubt my weight gain prior to RNY was due to depo either. Hope this helps and good luck! :-)
