Question:
HELP food choices...can anyone give me a sample menu for 8 wks out?
I had Rny 2/13/08 and Im down 40lbs. I want to maintain my weight loss but I think I'm eating the wrong things. I can eat almost anything and I dont dump and its scaring me. Though I dont over eat, or eat sugary foods i think my choice of drinks can be a little on the sugary side...I am addicted to Vitamin water. Here is a sample. B-1 scramble egg/ dice ham (OJ)... L-half of sand and salad...S-fruit or 100 cal pk snack...D-Baked chkn, mash p, spinach. Is this appropriate? — msjackson84 (posted on April 7, 2008)

Sounds like the choices aren't too bad, but the main thing is how much you
are eating that early. half a sand a salad sounds like an awful lot. I was
only able to eat maybe ahlf a sand that early. I too have no problems with
dumping and am able to eat most anything with no problems. That just
happens sometimes. Just watch the amount you are eating and make sure you
are getting your protein in first and foremost. Congrats on the weight loss
so far and good luck!

Vitamin water is SOOOO loaded with sugar (OJ needs to be limited too)...If
you could find one that is sugar free, in the long run you will be thankful
you did...otherwise I hear those vitamin type waters can be very
beneficial. Your meals look nicely rounded...just try to keep your sandwich
bread a "whole grain" rather than a white bread (or a low carb
whole wheat roll up is nice) and eat mashed potatoes, rice and pasta only
occasionally...Your 100 calorie snack should be cut completely and replaced
with a protein snack (jello with protein or soy crisps or yogurt, ricotta
cheese whipped with sf jello pudding mix, nuts, meat jerky) There are
endless snacks that could replace that sugary one that have protein rather
than sugar...The calories are good at 100 but you'd be better off eating a
higher calorie protein snack (they tend to be more calories sometimes)
later when your weight loss stops, you will find yourself craving sugar and
hunger pangs from complex carbs are horrendous after two years! I mean
TERRIBLE! Stop the sugar/bad carbs NOW while your pouch is in cruise
control! Eventually you will take over and your pouch won't be protecting
your head from taking over...This is most of the reason for weight gain
after 2 years. It comes so fast and by total shock and surprize...
You are doing wonderful though! Just keep be a little more aware of
sugar...that's all! Don't forget to take your vits and supps :) One more
thing...whenever you hear yourself say "I think I am eating the wrong
things"....deep down you know that you are right! Listen to that
voice it's telling you what you already knew! Much luck sweetie!

Your food choices sound okay to me. Just get the protein first, and get
rid of the sugar! With RNY you have a window of opportunity. If you don't
get the sugar out of your diet now, you will have problems later. You have
lost a tremdous amount of weight! Congratulations. Respect your tool, and
use it properly, and you won't be posting next year wondering why your
weight creeped back up! I used to be a Coke-a-holic. It was practically
all I drank. Now I am clean! Sugar-free for a year and a half! After
you get off sugar, you will lose the cravings for it! I promise! Take
care!

My sergeon reguired us to take several classes on food, fitness, and
possible side effects. Each of these classes were a great help, but what I
learned from the foods class was 70% of my protein which is 75 grams a day
needs to come from meats, beans, and low fat, natural sugar only dairy.
The rest of the foods need to be fresh veggies and fruits. He does allow
us to eat some canned or packaged fruits but they tought us to read the
lables. I like Del Monte No Sugar Added Peaches and Pears. Also, no carbs
for the first 6 months and then only complex carbs. No Carbs means no
bread, pasta, rice etc. Complex Carbs are whole grain wheat, brown rice
and whole wheat Pasta, and after 6 months I can have small servings of
baked or mashed potato. Oils are limited to Extra Virgin Olive, peanut,
and canola. After 6 months we can have nuts, up to one tablespoon as a
snack. Nothing with granulated or powder sugar. Coffee after 3 months and
decafe tea after 2 weeks. Each doctor is different. Mine turn patients
down that are no comitted to the program. He has recently added a few
drinks other than water 100 oz per day and crystal light. Now we can have
Ocean Spray Light, 8 oz per day, or all we want of Ocean Spray Diet. Of
Course no soft Drinks or wine or beer. Hope this helps. Each Doctor is
different. Yous may give you a grat leeway. Our Surgeon makes a very
small pouch so I can only eat about 5 oz total of food three meals a day,
as the pouch is about the size of a man's thumb. We are taught to each on
smaller dinner plates so it looks like we have a plate full. After 4
weeks, I was lucky to eat 3 oz for a meal. One thing that stuck with from
class was the fact our great grand parents were not fat was they at only
natural foods, from the farm, and worked the land from sunrise to sunset.
Women churned the butter, feed the stock and gather the eggs, in addition
to raising and caring for the kids and cleaning the house. No one had a
desk job, and there were no fast foods, or much in other than the same food
when they ate out or at freinds homes. That is while my doc is so big on
natural foods, as little as possible packaged foods, as he feels there are
too many ingredents that we just don't understand, and still eat, like
preseritives, which stop the food from processing naturally in our systems
correctly. Best of success to you.

I had my surgery 2/14/08
and down about 46 pounds and I can't hardly keep anything down yet I tried
1tbs of salad and it came right back up, I can only eat 1/4 of an egg right
now.are you getting all your water and protien in? because that may be why
you can eat so much.

Do you see a dietician? If you weren't given menus yet I would suggest
making an appointment with her. If you don't have one you can ask your
surgeon for a referral to see one; she would be able to guide you through
the post-op period.

While all doctors are different, mine was clear about stayinig away from
anything that was 'white' - bread, potatoes, sugar (especially sugar).
That would include your 100 cal snacks, and your sandwich unless it is on a
'real' whole grain bread. But, yes, that is a lot of food, and heavy types
of food early. I remember my doctor saying that in about 6 months I'd see
that I was able to eat 1/2 a sandwich and a little soup. I would not be
fooled by the fact that you do not dump. It is a curse. I am now almost 6
years out and had lost about 110 lbs, and now have to 're-lose' about 40
because I could eat anything (not quantity) but type of food, without any
problems. I know my pouch is fine because when I eat as I should protein
first, no liquids with meals and good carbs (veggies, etc) I am full with
little food and stay full for a good amount of time. Don't be fooled. The
tool will not work if you abuse it. When I had my surgery I got a large
book, specifying everything I could and could not eat for life. I just
reopened it and am already down by 5 lbs. Oh, get rid of the Vitamin
water. Propel is fine, at least according to my doc. I could not tolerate
plain water, actually I still can't. Now I drink flavored AquaFina ALIVE,
10 calories....Blessings to you and I wish you much success.

Hi Takeia, I'm over 5 months out and have lost 104lbs. I had my RNY on
10/15 and just now started to be able to eat bread... It sounds like you
are doing really well even the vitamin waters. Sometimes for me the plain
water would land hard in my stomach for some reason and the vitamin waters
kept me away from snacking in between. Yes there is sugar in it but not as
much sugar as a soda. The only think I see wrong on your food choices
would be the half sand. only becuase of the bread. I know the dumping
thing scares me too becuase now I can even have a brownie and I don't feel
sick at all..... protein in your meal first is rule #1 and then vegs and
then starches. mashed potatoes is ok just now every day. You are only two
months out so mashed potatoes is ok for now and you will see that later on
your taste buds will change even about the vitamin waters.. I think you are
doing fine for right now keep it up.

I'm not sure what to tell you about you diet except that it seems like a
lot of food for 2 months post-op. I am 14 months post and find I can eat
1/2 of a sandwich but only half of the bread. I always have my protein
first, and few carbs. I have my meals with a high protein snack (small
serving of nuts or a cheese stick) I am down 157 lbs so what I have done,
works for me. I don't dump, unless I eat salmon. I have really stayed
clear of added sugars, so I do not eat 100 cal snack packs. I hope all
goes well for you. Kim

i would ease down on the vitamin water because of the sugar content. Just
normal water is better. Limit the OJ too. You are better off just eating
either the half sandwich or the salad and not both for lunch. I was told to
stay away from the 100 calorie snack packs since they are wasted calories
and carbs. You are better off having the peice of fruit or some nuts.
Dinner seems alright as long as you monitor that serving size. I would be
eating more protein though. Incorporate nuts, cottage cheese, yogurt (I get
the no sugar added Blue Bunny brand that I find at WalMart). You seem to be
doing great on the weight loss and you are only several weeks out of
surgery. Just watch the portions that is what is going to get you.
