Question:
Drinking beer or mixed drinks?

I am not a big drinker, well hardly at all. But once a year I go out of town to a big meeting with my company. And everyone drinks allot. I usually have maybe 1 or 2 drinks the entire time. But this time I am not sure what to do, I had surgery on Jan. 10th of this year...the meeting will be late March or April. Can I drink anything? I am thinking I will just cary something around so that people don't ask me or try to order drinks for me.    — shellymarie (posted on February 18, 2008)

Post RNY patients will get "tipsy" with one drink or less. The effects will wear off quickly, but the blood alchol levels will still be elevated. If you had 2 or 3 drinks, over a few hours, you may feel fine, but your blood alcohol levels might get you a ticket or a night in jail if you get stopped by local authorities while driving.

I would watch how much you drink, as in what Dave had suggested. Also if you do choose to have a "few" I would make sure there wasn't anything carbonated or high sugar content. Good Luck to You and Happy Losing.....

Just stay away from it and drink water. I tell tose that want to know, I had gastric Bypass Surgery and my doctor will not allow me to drink, or a simpler answer is I am taking medication that does not allow drinking. Enjoy and be the designated driver. Don't even think about taking a drink, you have come to far to fall back now.

My Dr. said to wait 1 year after my RNY. I am 4 1/2 years post op and it only takes about 1/4 of a drink to get me smashed. I am a cheap drunk. LOL!

Doctors say not to drink for a year. You are still healing...If you drink alcohol now...it's going to burn right up to your nose hairs. Don't worry what people think if you're not drinking! :::FUGETABOUT them!::: I'm 4 years out and and I just take a few sips and it goes straight to my blood...By the time I get half way thru a glass of wine...I am toasted. I'm another cheap date...But I'm older than you! I'm 4! You are just a baby...

Hello Shelley I agree with Bill and another poster. Just tell them you can't drink at this time due to medical reasons -- saying "no thank you" is always an option.

I think your solution is a good one. Walk around with a glass of "something" (water would work). Don't drink. Especially because this is work, and you have no idea how the alcohol will hit you now. A few sips could send you to a very bad place. Just write it off for now. The body you're going to have is going to mean much more to you anyway.

Well actually, I'm having a drink now, Wild Turkey (101) on ice. I get slammed on 2! But I sleep great - relax, have a beverage, stay away from sugary and/or carbonated, and DO NOT DRIVE! In fact, I would recommend you be with someone you trust - you're a cheap date now!

I made the mistake of taking a few sips of my sons mixed drink and within 5 minutes I was laying on my bed rolled up into a ball, crying my eyes out. NEVER AGAIN!!!!! I like your idea of carrying around a glass of water so people don't offer to buy you something. Good luck, I sometimes miss not being able to have even a few sips of alcohol, but then again I love the "new me" and it's so worth giving alcohol up. Renee

Well I wouldn't care what anyone thinks. A lot of people don't drink. You could just have juice ..oj..though and no one would notice the difference. On the other hand, you could have a real drink and just sip it slowly. It's not likely to do damage. Remember, everything in moderation. I had my surgery on Jan. 14 and I was used to having one or two glasses of wine almost every night. I stopped for 6 weeks and last night I had a small glass of white wine. I gave part of it back to my husband. Funny thing is that I don't miss it at all.

DO NOT DRINK!! ask the bartender to put cranberry juice or OJ into a glass with Ice that would make it look like your have a drink and sip on that and once thats done ask for a glass of water with Ice so it looks like ur drinking a vodka on ice..LOL You 100% cannot drink or even hold an alcoholic bevrage..its dangerous!! I ahve learned over time to do just what I suggested.. it works and no one knows the difference... Good luck Elisa

You do get drunk quicker and it does last just as long as if you didnt have the surgery. I tried drinking beer and it went right through me and I was in the bathroom all night. I drink top shelf vodka with tonic and lemon. I drink is slower and I keep one drink longer. I didnt pick up a drink for 2 years after my surgery. I was afraid to. And you know what. You sound like a person getting a tatoo but you have to put it in a place where no one will see it for fear of embarrasment or someone saying something. If you going to hide it dont do it. You are here to please yourslef and no one else. Who cares if you drink? Thats your decision not theres and if they dont respect that then these people are not your friends

Hello! You will get tipsy very quick now after rny surgery. I can feel the alcohol after a couple of sips so be careful. I do have an occasional glass of white wine which seems to be ok. 2 glasses is my limit though or I may dance on the table - LOL! :-)

I am 1 year out and I am a bartender. Vodka and the flavored vodkas don't have any sugar or carbs. I mix it with diet cranberry juice or unsweetened iced tea. Raspberry vodka with unsweetened iced teas is really good. Just be careful, you will get drunk fast.

about 6 mos after my surgery, I went to my highschool class reunion.(Not saying which one!) I had a glass of white wine which I carried around with me. I wet my lips with it only....and left the entire glass when it was all over...but it was something to hold in my hand. I guess even that wasn't necessary...but it only left me with one hand to wonder what to do with. LOL! Regards~

I say it is your decision if you drink or not, just remember you will get drunk a lot quicker. As stated stay away from carbonated and sugary ones. I wouldn't let your time away for work be your first time attempting it and seeing how you do. Try a light beer or something light at home and see how that fares. Then you will know how much and what you can tolerate. If nothing else, just stick with water and don't worry about what other people think of you. You did this for YOU and no one else! :) Good luck and happy losing!!

I was told not to have alcohol for at least 6 mos out. When I did I had a glass of wine. I didn't even drink half when I felt the affects. If you are not a drinker don't start just because they have one. Just keep in your hands a glass of ice water with lemon, you can even bring a lemonade to go packet and add a little at a time for flavor and it will look like a "MIKES LEMONADE" drink. This way you don't have to explain. Best of luck

Yeah so I was in the same boat as you. Didn't want many people to know about my surgery and didn't want to seem lame for not drinking at social events. So what I did was emptied out a Budweiser 4o and filled it with Crystal Light! It worked great! People were cheersing me all night, and I was lauging so hard on the inside! I think carying something around with you is a great idea if it makes you feel better. It did me! Good Luck!

My Doctor told me never to drink anything that is carbonated EVER!!!!!!!!!! The carbonation will stretch out your pouch and you will get fat again, so beer is a definite no no. You can order a glass of wine and take a few sips, but i wouldn't drink the whole glass. Better yet don't drink at all and if people ask why, tell them it is fattening because it really is. It is extra calories that will put weight on you.
