Question:
Acid reflux with lap-band
Hi The doctors office called me back & said due to my Upper GI test shows I have acid reflux and swallow slow. The Dr office is acting like my surgery may be postponed. Has anyone ever heard that if u have acid reflux or Upper GI problems you cant get lap-band? The doctors office hasnt called to give me all the info. The front office called and told me this but really couldnt explain it then asked if I wanted gastric bypass instead? I'm so discouraged I dont know what to do. Surgery schedule for Jan 3. Any advice is welcomed. — candice2005 (posted on December 27, 2007)

I had RNY surgery. I hear a lot of people speak of how their acid reflux
problems completely went away after RNY surgery. I suggest you go to a
support group meeting for lap bands and one for RNY to talk to these
people. RNY is a more extensive surgery, but tends to have a higher
success rate, listening to health professionals that speak at our local
support group meetings.

ok spoke to the Dr he said if he put the band on me then i would always
feel like Im chocking cause I have a poor swallowing response due to my
chronic acid reflux. He said gastric bypass would fix it. So Im doing it.

I had severe acid reflux before banding and it wasn't an issue. I have no
had even the slighest hint of acid since surgery! I would definintely ask
your surgeon to explain what the issue is, and if you don't like his
explaination talk to another surgeon before you make a decision to switch.

Don't be discouraged. I had RNY 4 years ago and am thrilled with my
results. Don't limit your options.

Hi Candice:
I have acid reflex also, Why dont you ask your doctor if you
could have the by-pass surgery instead of the band surgery? I am going to
have my surgery on the 18th of January2008,I choose the by pass surgery
because ther is less problems with the slip age of the band. Best wishes

hi candice,
most of us have acid reflux and still get the surgery...either kind.
please don't worry. they will take good care of you, ok? you can have
gastric or the lapband. either one will still be done with acid reflux.
don't worry.

Hi Candace, I had LapBand and had to have it REMOVED due to terrible
reflux! I would wake up at night CHOKING on vomit in my throat. It was
TERRIBLE. I ended up have RNY. If you are having reflux before surgery,
PLEASE dont get the LAPBAND. You will be sorry. I dont mean to discourage
you, but I was a cash pay for BOTH, and would have saved TONS of money as
well as pain, by having the RNY first. Good Luck,
Ronda

I had terrible acid reflux before I had my band put in 6 weeks ago. They
tested me for a hernia and said there could be problems if there is a
hernia. I ended up not having a hernia, went through with the surgery and
have not had a single problem with my acid reflux since. I don't even take
my medicine anymore. Hope this helps.

Check with your surgeon to find out for sure. I had horrible GERd until my
lap-band. I have almost none now. Donna, Indiana
