Question:
How many had fears of going under?

I am waiting for my approval for the lap-band, and am DEATHLY afraid about going under and not coming back. What were your fears and experiences?    — KGVega (posted on September 24, 2007)

put trust and faith in God and your surgeon and all will work out like it's supposed to. I was very at peace when I went under for lap RNY, and at the time i was a single mom. what freaked me out worse was putting my will together in the event that "something happened". Best of luck to you and congrats!

I was very nervous since a man had just died a month back from when I had my surgery. It wasn't at the same hospital as me but it still made the news. I decided this was my last chance at happiness and prayed and had faith and that got me through. The death rate is small compared to other kinds of surgeries. I asked my surgeon straight oout what his mortality rate was and he said he had performed about 300 bypasses and lost 2. You will do fine, perfectly normal what you are feeling and going through right now. Best Wishes for that new body!! Mickey..........

Boy was I SCARED:( For good reason after minor knee surgery I quit breathing in recovery because of sleep apnea. So DO get checked for apnea. Truly though I hard to get dead on the operating table, nearly all die later because of troubles like blood clots. Have a heart to heart with your surgeon or the staff they can reassure you and do know WLS is way safer over time than remaining MO. Long term studies show this. I am so glad I over came the fear and had WLS. Best decision I ever made in my entire life

I was nervous, just like everytime I've been put under. But I know that it's God's will, keep a positive attitude and you will be fine. Good luck

I think everyone has some fears, it's all very normal. I think it would abnormal if you didn't.... I am a single mother and was so scared of not coming back to them, but at the rate that my weight was going, I would have left them anyway. You have to trust and believe. You will do just fine!!!

I had the lap band six weeks ago and have had almost a surgery phobia in the past. I have found that if you can get your doctor to prescribe a small dose of Ativan that you can take the night before and then the morning of, it helps alot. The surgery was short and was only in the recovery room for about 1/2 hour. I was really nervous the few days before but now would do it again in a heartbeat. Have lost 34 lbs and have so much more energy. Hang in there...it will all be worth it.

Don't have a question, but it's very encouraging to hear other's opinion on going under, I'm waiting for the surgery too, but I'm confident that god will carry me thru. Good luck to all. God bless

I was afraid too. I prayed a lot and that helped, but let me tell you. I was grateful to wake up! A sense of humor helped, as did simply letting go. You'll be OK. This is such a safe surgery compared with gastric bypass. HOpe to hear from you post-surgery.

Talk to your doctor about your fears and hopefully s/he will be able to reassure you. Find out how many people s/he has had die on the table. The low number may be reassuring. You can also ask your doctor for anti-anxiety medication to be taken before you get to the hospital. I always imagine my partner hugging/holding me as I am put under and this has taken away a lot of the stress. Best wishes. Sid

I'm two weeks away right now. Yes, I'm starting to get VERY nervous. I've been put under before. And I believe this is the closest thing to being dead. When you wake up, its a great feeling, it's like you just lost track of time. I agree with the others. Let your faith and love ones help you through. I'm putting all mine in the hands of the lord.
