Question:
FOr the ladies-menstrual cycle during surgery?
I know it may be a weird question, but, if I end up getting my monthly visitor a day or so before surgery, or even on teh day of, will they still go ahead w/the surgery? ALso, have any of you experienced this, how did it go as far as changing stuff, etc? — Meghan R. (posted on April 10, 2006)

hi, I had my surgery on 2/23/06 and I had a visitor show up the night
before. They still did the surgery. No big deal for them. it was a
little uncomfortable changing, I used a pad during this time. It made
things a little easier. good luck. kd

Same thing here! I had the period right before the surgery and was afraid
they would turn me down. No problem at all! They even gave me a pad, and
took me to the operating room. Nothing to worry about.

aww I feel your pain about this question.
I had my surgery, and the DAY I got home from the hospital, my friend
decided now it would be a great time to visit. I should of had it during my
surgery, but I am sure the stress kept it away.
Let me tell you how hard it is currently to be recovering from surgery AND
having to deal with this :(
Good luck on things to come!

I got my monthly 1 day before surgery and the doctor said great because you
will usually get it right after surgery, even if you are not regular. Not a
problem at all.

Hello Meghan,
I started my monthly the day of my surgery and I just took pads to the
hospital with me. They even changed my pad sometime during surgery since I
woke up with a catheter in. Just make sure not to wear tampons. Changing
was just fine, if you are having a Lap RNY you will find that you are more
mobile than you think you would be.

Hello,
I am 5 yrs. Post-op and I just wanted to say that having the surgery itself
made me have my visitor early. My surgeon and the nurses told me that it
was normal, that for some reason having surgery can make you start your
cycle. So I had to have it to deal with afterwards and I had the Open
Bypass so it was not fun. I had to have help changing stuff. Kind of
humiliating but glad I did it none the less....:o)

Having your menstral cycle is no big deal to Doctors or Nurses and they
will take care of you during and after the surgery. Pads and Chucks under
your bottom, most likely.
Havng had three C-sections, I learned first hand how well the nurses
and techs will help, so there is no need to worry or feel embarrassed at
all.
Good luck. I am on my second year of no periods.....lol. I am 52 and
seemed to have gone into eary menopause since my mother's death 2 1/2 years
ago. Of course, there is a chance of re-starting my period since
weightloss can trigger that with estrogen stored in fat and all that blah
blah blah. Hopefully, it won't restart. I jokingly asked the surgeon to
yank my uterous and gall bladder while he was doing the RNY, but alas, the
gall bladder looked healthy and it was authorized by Kaiser to take it
UNLESS it was unhealthy.......needless to say, the uterous is still there,
too!
I figured since I have no need for it any longer, he could take it! Darn
it all!
Try not to worry about those little things.......you'll make yourself
crazy. To relax and try not to worry, I would close my eyes, breathe
deeply and visualize ME doing all the fun things I have been missing out on
for the last 15 years. Biking, riding, etc. (also a few activities with my
husband that I won't mention- T.M.I.!)

No big deal. I started the day of my surgery. Actually I was in pre op
when I actually started and I had no problems. I had a feeling it was
going to happen so I made sure I brought larger underwear than I would
usually wear and my own pads because I can't stand the ones they give you
at the hospital. Good luck sweetie.

There is no such thing as a weird question on this board!!!! I asked that
same question to my surgeon! I have anemia issues and I was curious about
the blood loss issue. My surgeon basically smiled and said, "If it
doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me!" So yes, they can and will
operate on you if you are having your cycle. Best of luck to you as you
head out on yout weight loss adventure!

speaking from experience, i have had 10 surgeries since i was 18, i am 37
now, and what they do is have you wear one of those huge hospital pads,
like when u have kids, and they have pads under the operating table too.
this is not cause for concern, your surgery will go on as scheduled

Hi, it seems everyone has covered your question well. I have one more
suggestion. If you don't have a shower hose get one. Even if you don't have
your monthly right away you may not be the most flexable person after
surgery and well a good power wash never hurts lol. Its also great not to
have to manuever your whole body around the shower rinsing off, a real
energy saver immediately postop. Good luck!

just to reiterate what has been said. I have had 4 surgeries in my life,
and each one caused my period to start while in the hospital> I had a
hysterectomy 10 yearsago and it was a pleasure when I had my r n y lap. to
not have to deal with pads and the mess. Shower hoses really help. If you
don't have that, get a spray bottle and squirt it down there, that works
well. maril

i had my surgery on jan.7,2005 and yes i came on my period about a day
before going into the hospital and the nurse gave me a pad to wear before
they sent me to the operating room and once the surgery was over and i was
sent to recovery the bleeding got worser but the staff at atlanta medical
cntr in atlanta were very nice and continued to assist me with pad
changing, so dont worry everything will be alright, hand in there!!

I had mine the day before my surgery, do don't worry - totally different
plumbing they are working on. Your stomach has nothing to do with your
cycle. The nurse in the hospital helped me get cleaned up after my surgery
and she brought me some of those stretchy maternity panties to wear and I
had brought my own pads. You just can't wear a tampon during surgery.
Good luck!!
