Question:
Have any post-ops been successful with avocado?

I'm 26 days postop for a lap RNY and have been doing just great. However, this afternoon I splurged at the market and bought a nice ripe Haas avocado (for those of you who don't live in the US or live in warmer climes where avocados are cheap, they used to be .79 cents and now this one was $2.99...) anyway I peeled it and ate about a tablespoon of it and I almost immediately DUMPED! Nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea, YUCK! Needless to say the rest of the avocado goes in the garbage (can't be good for my puppy, can it?) Anyway, I was very surprised and kind of bummed out that something like that would make me so sick. I thought I'd see if anyone else has had good or bad experience postop with avocados. Thanks!    — Elizabeth M. (posted on March 19, 2000)

I really was hoping to see some responses to this one...I love avacadoes also....i have heard that everything that comes from the earth is good for you....except avacadoes because they are so full of fat....but can't imagine this making you dump...that means when we finally do have enough room...no gucamole...sigh...if only we'd known before we had the surgery...just kidding...

I am almost 5 months post-op from a Lap proximal RNY. I tried a few small pieces on some pinto beans at about 3 months and did fine. Sometimes what you can not eat one month, will be OK the next. You may also want to do what I did and just use it as a little added flavoring. Best of luck.

I love avacado and I add some to my fat free refried beans. They have the 'good' fat and so far I have not had any trouble at all with it. But then again, I am one of those post ops that still can't tolerate any kind of meat whatsoever. Maybe if feel brave later, you will be able to handle it. Each one of us is different. Good luck :)

Vaocado. Yum. No problem at all, not ever. Just with trying to scrape together enough $$$ to BUY them, of course!

Hi, I think the reason you had trouble with the avocado is the fat content. And you are not evn 4 weeks post op silly girl! Are you sure you are supposed to be eating things liek that yet? Maybe if you try again at about 4 months it will not make you sick..Avocados are loaded with fat! I am not condeming you...just remembering some of my own mistakes a few months ago!LOL Good luck with "one of my favorite foods" too, in about 3 or 4 months down the road. Cheri

Today I am 4 wks post-op. I had the BEST guacamole about 3 days ago- but it made me sick. I don't know if I ate too much, or too fast, but it didn't feel good at all. I might try it again in another week or 2.

I have been successful with avocado, but not at 26 days. You may want to try again in a couple of months. I tried guacamole at about 2 months, just a little, probably no more than a tablespoon, and it went down fine. Good luck.

The first time I had avocado I dumped. I think I was about 1 1/2 or 2 mos out. Now I don't have any problems with it. I usually only eat about 1/8 to 1/4 at a time, though.

I was about 7 weeks post-op when I first tried some avacado and I was very sick. I tried a bit the next day and it was fine. I think like so many other foods it is a matter of what your body is in the mood for that day. I had a twelve year post-op patient tell me that if it doesn't work one day try it the next or a week later and it probably will work, I have found that is pretty much true.

I'm 14 days POST and had guacamole yesterday at a restaurant with hubby, and did fine. No dumping etc. Smooth it went down really nice. Plus did you know that avocados have MORE potassium than bannas? albeit more fat content..but there ya have it.

I am 19 days P.O. and I had 1 oz of Avacado 14 days out and I did just fine with it. I mushed it up with a fork and knife before eating any of it of course. I added a little salt and pepper and did fine with that as well. Then I experimented with addidng a little bit of (fat free) cream cheese. I did fine with that as well. I never had more than 1 oz of the avacado at a time though.

MY SURGERY DATE WAS 050302 AND I HAD A AVACODO LAST WEEK WITHOUT A PROMBLEM. I THINK MAYBE IT DEPENDS HOW LONG YOUR SURGERY WAS AND IF YOUR SWALLEN WENT DOWN YET. I GUESS EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT

My surgery was 7/29/02 and I had an avacado a couple of weeks ago. It tasted great! Just a little salt & pepper and it went down fine. No cramps, no sick tummy, no dumping, no problem! Good luck!

I LOVE avocados! I had one today with salsa & it was fantastic! & GREEN! No dumping so far. I'm 7 weeks out, so maybe that's the reason.

I have learned that having 1/8 of an avacado at lunch and dinnner helps my skin retain a youthful appearance. I am 49 , in menopause, so the avacado has kept my skin soft. I also don't worry about getting any other fats in my diets now. Oh and my hair shines like crazy, too.

Avacado and I go WAY back! It was one of the first foods I tried post-op and I was so happy to have it go down well and stay down. I am only 20 days out, but I am hoping that I will always tolerate my favorite fruit!

I absolutely adore guacamole and avacados and have been eating them for my first year post-op regularly. One word, though, if you don't have a gall bladder or gall bladder problems, you may have problems with them because of the fat content.

Your note doesn't state when you had your surgery. I'm going to be 11 months post-op and have no problem with them. I mix it with onions and hot sause. Yes, it is high in fat but good fat. If they bother your stomach stay away for a way. Almonds are a good sourse of protein and good fat.

I am 9 days post-op and have had a hard time with just liquids, so I started adding really soft/pureed foods to my meals. Avocados have been the perfect consistency and I have had no problems. I can eat 1/2 of a very small one (about 1/4 to 1/3 cup) and it helps satisfy my cravings for fresh vegtables.

I am 3 weeks postop, and I had some very delicious guacomole at a Mexican restaurant last night. I had absolutely no problems with it. I especially like mixing it with some queso. Fortunately, however, I've had very few problems with foods. Ice Cream caused me to break out in a cold sweat. Other than that, I've had minor cramping occasionally, but the more times I eat something, the sooner my stomach gets used to it.

I havn't had avocado since my surgery but at my support group last week alot of people were saying that avocado is good for weight loss patients and it cures carb cravings.
