Question:
What kind of questions can I expect at my psyc evaluation?

Psych Evals vary widely. Mine consisted of a 45 minute conversation with a psychologist. My best friend had lapband at another practice and had to do formal testing and two separate appointments. So, best person to ask is the psychologist when you make the appointment, and I'd phrase it as, "what are you looking for?" Most likely, they are looking to see if you have an eating disorder, a substance abuse problem, any emotional problems and if you have people in your life who will sabotage you. "Yes" to any of these questions is not automatically going to deny you the surgery, but they probably will look for there to be some way to manage these things (med compliance, therapy, documented time of being clean with substance abuse stuff). Again, best person to ask is the person who's going to be doing the eval, because everyone is different. Good Luck!!!

Mine was pretty much a 1/2 hour interview & he asked me why I wanted the surgery and how did I think my life would change having it. He asked about my eeating habits and be really honest. If you have an eating disorder thuis will just help them help you get it all right. I also took the written psch. test (MMI) ?? that took an hour. You need to be really honest or the surgery will not work! Good luck with all of it. Lori in Michigan.

Mine was about one hour oral with about 3 different mutible choice questions type test. All of it took about four hours. You need not worry about it. Just be as truthful as you possiably can be. There are no right or wrong answers. It's just to check and make sure you can accept the mind set to be succsesful at your WLS goal. If theres a problem they usally can fix it. It's kinda intresting because you'll find out things that you didn't know about yourself. Gary

I had my psych appt this morning. I took the MMPI and a lifestyle satisfaction test last week. She asked me how long I had been thinking about surgery, what I expected for an outcome besides losing weight, what my eating habits were, dieting history, family background for medical or mental illness, support system, any other addictions, etc. We went over the results of the MMPI - I am on 2 depression meds and my depression and anxiety scores were way below the normal range - that was pretty great to hear. That was it. It lasted 40 minutes and I won't see her again. She cleared me to have the MD, PT and 1st Nut appt and an EKG. You need to be honest - they aren't trying to stand in your way, they just want to make sure you are ready to handle everything. good luck!
