Question:
Is honey a no no after surgery?

I love honey as a natural sweetner instead of using like splenda or regular sugar but is it a no no after surgery? I like it in tea, sometimes oatmeal and bread but wondered if it is nixed due to the no sugar rule after surgery.    — jenbn (posted on August 21, 2008)

I am just giving my honest opinion........ People think that because honey is "natural" that it must be ok to eat (with or without WLS). Sugar is sugar is sugar.... Honey will harm a Diabetic just as white granular sugar will. It will cause weight gain just the same, and rot teeth. It is sugar. If you had the RNY Gastric Bypass honey will make you feel ill if you eat too much, just as white granulated sugar will. This is good, it's a tool to help us not eat sugars. If you had Lap Band, you could eat it, but shouldn't, in order to lose weight. You'll need to get used to Splenda.

Some people are much more carb phobic than others..Including surgeons and nuts....You have to use your own discretion in these matters. Honey is the lesser of two evils! Because it's still sugar...It does have more nutritional value but not enough to justify eating it daily. I still use honey occassionally...Mostly for flavor in recipes where it's just a drizzle. Same with pure maple syrup...Just a drop for flavor....Some people are far more carb sensitive than others...I can handle 18-24 sugars...But I won't do that but on occasion...My fav protein bars have 13 gs of sugar...That is usually my max and I won't eat a protein bar everyday either. Then again....I didn't even have my first protein bar til year 4! For real! I only grab one on the run when I am just too busy to eat...Or lab day after fasting...I gotta eat after labs...I hate looking for food that is healthy on the run...You should avoid honey...Do I? No

I don't eat honey simply because of the fact it gives me terrible stomach pains, even before surgery. I do know that at my super Wal Mart they have sugar free honey. I know that sounds strange to me but it is there. Maybe something like this would be alright? It is right by the regular honey. Hope this helps.

I use the s/f honey. I found it at our Super Walmart and I use it in making different things. Hope this helps.

My NUT includes honey in the no-sugar list (like corn syrup, etc) but I would check with your own before making a decision. These boards are good for info but I think everyone should check with their own NUT for the final decision.

Honey has a lot of sugar and carbs, even though it is natural. It is one of nature's candies. I would recommend browsing through Steele's sugar free catalog on line and getting some sugar free supplies. I've liked everything I've tried from them. Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
