Question:
Please help...Need advice

I am 3months out and down 60+ pounds, I have been craving sweets like you wouldn't believe, it seems like everyday for this past week I have had a small bag of Joes's sugar free cookies(pecan sandies)..please yell at me, I want to cry. I am sooo happy to see the scale constantly declining but I am afraid that it will increase if I continue this pattern..please stir me in the right direction, I might be getting out of control..Thank you    — nzuri33 (posted on June 8, 2008)

When I crave sweets like that I go and buy yogurt, key lime pie or boston cream pie and that settles my craving for sweets. I have been told if I crave sweets live that to eat a dill pickle slice..I haven't tried that but I don't crave sweets that often. Good Luck...

An occasional sweet craving and indulgence is perfectly normal. If the cookies fit under your 30 carb/day regimen, by all means do it once in a while. Keep in mind that the more sweets/carbs you eat, the more you will crave. If you say no, after awhile, you won't crave them anymore. I will have some organic dark chocolate every now and again. When I crave sweets,(had rny on 5/27/08) which I haven't since this surgery, I get the Listerine regular flavor and keep a mouthfull in for maybe a minute. Swish it really good. It cuts the craving...the taste stays with you and who wants to eat anything over a flavor like Listerine! It usuallly works pretty well. Good luck. Almost forgot, there is a CRAVE TAP technique can get off of the discovery health channel. It is one of the features on the "I can make you thin" series and it works wonders...just keep doing it over and over till the craving goes away. Find the disc. chan website and you can find it online. Lyn

Yes, I craved a lot of things too, especially in the first few months after surgery (I'm 2+ years post-op, 210 lb weight loss), and especially sugar, but I didn't allow myself sugar because I didn't want to get sick. I still crave desserts, especially when I go out to eat, but I'm better able to resist and when I do decide to have something, I share with one or more people. One thing that saved me were (and are) the sugar-free Popsicles. They're very flavorful and very sweet. I think the most important thing I've learned, though, is not to beat myself up if I sometimes veer off schedule because that only makes things worse. I go more with the flow and have learned to let the off-schedule times be what they are and just get right back on. I hope you have good support from family and friends because that has helped me tremendously also.

Dont deprive yourself. If you want something sweet eat it. In moderation. I eat sugar candy. Very little but I eat it

Do you believe that a healthy body craves healthy foods? If you crave, in my opinion, anything other than water, your body is missing something. A nutrient, a mineral, a vitamin... something. Of course you won't find it in chemically enhanced cookie substitutes. But those chemicals may make you crave MORE of something not being found. Be sure your water intake is adequate, and really look at all you are consuming and how much real nutrition you're getting each day. You want someone to "yell" at you, when really you need a big old hug and a dose of some old fashioned nutritionally dense foods. The organic dark chocolate tip was golden. Try a section of chocolate (ORGANIC dark - no bad stuff) and allow it to slowly, slowly dissolve in your mouth. Maybe reward yourself with this on a day you get your required water and protein.

I like the Listerine idea. I eat sugar free stuff once in a while; not very often because the sugar alcohols give me serious gas! LOL! A sugar free latte from starbucks with a couple of splenda tastes pretty sweet and does not have sugar or sugar alcohols, so if you like those it is a good way to beat a craving. Also you will find that if you had RNY, the stuff that is not so good for you like the bread texture carbs, potatoes, etc.. go down much easier than the stuff we are supposed to eat like lean meats & veggies. The whole WLS experience is a process. You will continue to learn as you go. If YOU think the cookies are a problem, then they are and should not be in the house. If YOU think they are a trigger or binge food for you, then they seriously must go - but we can't come over to your house and get rid of them. That part is up to you. All we can do is offer alternatives like the Listerine, or a sugar free latte, or maybe a banana? I also like frozen fruit put into the Lite Yogurt. (You have to be careful with the Yogurts, a LOT of the "lite" yogurts take out the fat and add in sugar.) A lot of success is about access; if you know you just can't resist it then it doesn't ever get in the shopping cart. :0D U are succeeding! Keep it up!

Well congratulations on the 60+ pounds lost! BUT, OK, well here you go... A whole bag of cookies everyday!!! What are you thinking!!!!!! Get a hold of yourself!!! This is the same behavior that got you in this mess to start with & you're heading right back in that direction after ONLY 3 months. Everyone else has said "oh you poor thing go ahead & indulge yourself". And I say STOP IT RIGHT NOW! You say you might be getting out of control already at 3 months, what's it going to be like in another 3 months if you continue to let yourself do this? And then in other 6 months you're going to have eaten right through your tool. And if you're eating that much "cookies" how can you possibly be getting in enough protein? I'm not trying to be mean here, but I would want someone to give me a kick in the a$$ if I were in this situation. I hope this helps. And I hope you can get to some counseling or some kind of therapy to help with this head hunger, and that's really all it is. I do know how real it can be & how hard we have to work to overcome it. And, yes you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I have sweet cravings, I make my snack. This may sound gross, but... I take Ricotta cheese and mix in splenda and cinnamon. It is delicious. If you can get past the sounding gross part and taste it, I guarantee you will LOVE it..and the good thing is.. It gives you protein!!!
