Question:
Any one have any oatmeal experiences?

I would love to have some oatmeal with milk. If I make it thin I think my tummy should be ok. Has anyone else had any experience with oatmeal? I am three wks out and don't want to put anything in my pouch that is hard to digest!    — CAROL M. (posted on April 7, 2004)

My doctor said I could have oatmeal if I made it VERY liquidy. I didn't because I don't like oatmeal but check your food plan and see if it's there. If it is, enjoy it!

Always check with you nutritionist or food guide lines first at this stage. I eat all types of oatmeal with no problems and I started eating it about 3-4wks out and never had any problems myself. Good luck!

Both of these would kill me. The oatmeal is too high in carbs, it sits like a rock, then makes me go to sleep. Since surgery, I am extremely lactose intolerant, and the milk will give me cramps, gas, and bloating. *Good times, eh?* Keto Hot Cereal with a dab of butter, and cinnamon, on the Apple Cinnamon flavor works for me. FlaxOMeal type cereals, fixed the same way, also work. If unsweetened, drizzle with DaVinci SF syrups. YMMV.

Like the previous posters said "always check with your doctor first" - but I haven't tried oatmeal. I use plain cream of wheat (instant & watered down & add a tablespoon of sugar free maple syrup for flavor & a scoop of any whey tasteless protein - so that I don't feel guilty about eating something with not really much nutrional value. If you're going to try oatmeal - watch out for the flavored ones, because they are loaded with sugar too. Best Wishes!~Amanda

My dr.'s dietician told us we could have plain oatmeal and even add pureed fruits or cinnamon to flavor. But none of the "good" oatmeal, like the Peaches n' Cream, etc.

Oatmeal was one of the things I was allowed to have during the pureed phase after my surgery. I ate it from the start. I used Quaker Instant Oatmeal - regular flavor, made with lactaid milk instead of water. I didn't need to ad any sweetner - the lactaid milk seemed a little sweeter than regular milk to me. My pureed diet was about balance, not about getting in all kinds of protein, in the first few weeks. Once I moved on to the soft diet, that's when I put more effort into getting protein in. Protein foods are harder to digest at first, so all carbs are not bad, especially in the beginning, when the pouch is healing. (I did get my protein through pureed chicken and turkey the first four weeks. There was no instance by my dietician to start on protein drinks right away.) I don't know, but with having a balanced diet, with plenty of fiber and varied nutrients, I never had any bowel problems, either, early on. Now I eat cooked pin oats now and then, cooked with some dried bluberries or cranberries. Yum! (These are oats before they are "rolled" into the flakes we know as oatmeal).

I have just found a reduced sugar Quaker Instant Oatmeal in Apple Cinnamon flavor. It has 6g of Sugar which for some may be too much but I have found that I tolerate it very well. I have been having this each morning this week and LOVE IT!! I am so tired of eggs that this is a great change for me. Protein wise it only has I think 4g, but I get the majority of my protein in at lunch and dinner and high protein snacks as well. Good luck to you! Tiff (Lap RNY 2/17/04; 244-214)

Oatmeal doesn't bother me at all. Like most carbs it's pretty bland and easy to handle, when not used to the extreme. I do make mine very thin, and usually with skim milk and some kind of fruit or SF syrup for flavoring. Like others said, watch those carbs though and go easy! :)

I eat quaker instant regular flavor. And I compared labels with an expensive fancy supposedly high fiber non instant long cooking type, and guess what! the nutritional stats were almost identical as to fiber, carbs etc. I make mine w/ milk rather than water for the protein and calcium, I add other goodies in, splenda, cinnamon, unsweetened applesauce, sliced banana etc. YUMMY filling breakfast that keeps me full a long time.

I eat the Quaker instant regular flavor oatmeal just about every morning and have had no problems with it. I usually sweeten it with some Splenda and sometimes put in a little milk.

I eat cream of wheat with skim milk (almost like water) it it was fine. About 2 ozs is what I started with. When you can eat more South Beach has a GREAT recipe for Oatmeal Pancakes. I can only have 1 1/2 but it gives you fiber, good carbs, and protein. Check out the book.

Hey. I am 8 days out of surgery and have had oatmeal with milk. I just had it very runny and it worked.
