Question:
1 month pre op. How will I get enough protein?
What are some good protein drinks? Will I need a blender? — Ann M. (posted on August 17, 2002)

MANY will shake up neatly in a few oz of water. I've been using protein
supps for 8 yrs and never used a full sized blender. I use a cheapo hand
blender when I want the blended texture. I use about 7 different brands,
but my fave is ProScore 100. CHOCOLATE. (Is there anything else?)

I add some sugar free nestle quick to my chocolate drinks, my favorite is
Designer Whey Vanilla Praline and I too use one of those little hand
blenders you don't have a big mess to clean
ohhhh to flavor your drinks Smuckers makes a no sugar jelly- strawberry
etc great for flavoring vanilla or no flavor drinks yummy

Liquid protein packets=30gm. protein. Just add to a water bottle with an
ounce of flat-diet-orange-soda.

Hi.. I am 4.5 months post op and doing great. I didn't do the protein
early on as I just couldn't find one tolerable. But about 3-4 wks ago
Michelle Curran suggested to me the Proscore 100 chocolate and I'm
addicted. I love it. I do 2 scoops w/ l/2 cup of ice and I use 6 oz of 1
or 2% milk (some do water) and sometimes add a little sf chocolate pudding
for richness. I do use a blender as I liked the texture better that way.
That is my breakfast. I also do one when I get home from work that staves
off hunger while cooking dinner. I get more protein daily from my meals
(meats, egg, cheese, yogurt). I am 66# down and feel super. I tried about
8 proteins till I got into this one and I wish I'd done it from the
beginning. My best to you... you will do great.

Ann, we all have our favorites when it comes to protein shakes/drinks. You
will have to try several to find what suits your taste. And what tastes
good pre-op does not necessarily taste good post-op, especially the first
month or two post-op. For me, shakes were too thick to handle early on.
Try getting ahold of Isopure zero carb drinks in the glass bottles. They
look like koolaid and come in different flavors(grape frost, orange, fruit
punch , blue rasberry etc). Each bottle is 20 oz and 40 grams of protein.
The first few weeks, I would mix 1/2 a bottle of the fruit punch flavor
with Crystal light drinks and extra water to water it down and sip on that
all day-extra protein! I found the Isopure at Vitamin Shoppes, but if you
can't find in your area, you can order online at
www.performancenutrition.com, but they make you buy a case, altho you can
ask them to mix the flavors-$33.95 for case of 12.

Like the previous suggestion of the zero-carb glass bottles. I did this for
the first week, and then couldn't stand them any longer however. I drink
them only occasionally when I am on the run now. I would suggest you order
from vitalady.com- lots of samples to try. Maybe you will find one you
like. My favorite after trying all kinds of samples and not finding one is
Whey Delicious in vanilla bean. No sugar and 21 ozs per scoop. I mix with 4
oz of OJ, 3 oz of water, a few strawberries and yum. And yes I had this
right after surgery. Can be ordered if interested at proteinishealthy.com.
Good luck.

hiya
for the first couple of months you will need a protein drink that has
fat/carbs/sugar since it will be used as a meal replacement but once you
are eating solid food you can switch to the protein i use: Jarrow's Brand
Iso Rich Soy Protein Powder...i get it online at: www.vitamintrader.com for
$25 for a 2# container (incl. shipping/handling)
this protein powder you can use to cook with..2 tbls = 25gram of protein,
no fat, no sugar, no carbs & 110 calories
i put it in with casseroles, soups, stir fry, mixed it with the ricotta
cheese mixture inside of my lasagna, my family cannot tell it's in the food
and we get extra protein!
i mix it with coffee and vitamite (i cannot "do" milk) in the
morning, when just in a drink it tends to be a bit chalky so i just keep
stirring and stir before i drink
i cannot live without it!
good luck!
