Question:
So what am I looking at....
I want to know what kind of pain I am looking at here... I am scheduled for laproscopic rny on 7/23/09, extremely nervous... want to know how bad the pain will be after surgery... I had asked my surgeon and he said it would be the same pain as when I had my gallbladder removed... I had NO pain for that... I am starting to get really scared... I know it will be worth it but need to know what to expect..... I also wanted to know how much weight is the average to loose each week/month???? — wendy-s (posted on July 16, 2009)

I HAD MY GALLBLADDER REMOVED AND ALSO 3 CESEREAN SECTIONS. THE LAPROSCOPIC
SURGERY IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TWO DIFFERENT SURGERIES AS FAR AS PAIN.
REALLY IT WASNT THAT BAD AT ALL. I HAD SURGERY JUNE 11 AND FEEL GREAT.
STILL DONT HAVE AN APPETITE. WHEN I EAT I FEEL A LITTLE NAUSIOUS, BUT II
UNDERSTAND THAT IT NORMAL. I HAVE LOST 25 LBS SINCE SURGERY.

I had my RNY June 29th, and I was up walking 6 hours after he surgery.
There was pain, but nothing like I thought it would be. It felt like I did
alot of sit ups and my tummy was sore from working out. It's been two weeks
now, and I'm walking and doing things around the house. I have lost 13
pounds since the surgery. I had lost 22 before so I'm down a total of 35
pounds. You will do fine, and you will feel great. Good luck and welcome to
the losers bench. Theresa L

Some people say that when they woke, they felt like nothing had been done
to their bodies and they had little pain at all. I had a little bit
different experience - I had quite a bit of pain after the sugery,
especially walking around the next day (I had surgery late in the day, so
there was no one to help me walk around by he time they finally got me into
my room) - I wouldn't say it's nearly as bad a childbirth (I've been
through that), but you had a major surgery in which a lot of stuff was cut
and sewn back together. It is bearable (with meds), and the major pain
really only lasts 3-5 days and then it's like a veil lifts and you start
feeling better and better each day. In the 2-3 days right after the
surgery they hook you up with a pain pump - you can manage your own pain in
the first two days. After that, it is mostly gas pains from all of the air
that was in your system and your body adjusting to it's new plumbing. Then,
it's like you did a million sit-ups.
Don't stress, even with some pain, it is over quickly and then you strt
dropping weight like crazy. Just take it easy if you are hurting and all
will be fine.

The first surgery I'd ever had was LAP/RNY. I had absolutely no pain. The
nurse even commented on how I was not pumping the morphine. The next year I
had hernia repair done lap and the pain was horrible. Go figure.

I had RNY on January 8, 2009. I also had three c sections, and it is
NOTHING like the pain from those surgeries. Never had any other surgery,
but this one was more of a soreness or uncomfortable feeling. You don't
feel sliced open, especially if you are getting it done laparoscopically.
The incisions may itch a bit, and the only thing that really bothered me
and gave me pain when I was in the hospital for two days was the drainage
tube that stayed in my belly. The weight of the ball filled with
blood/fluid when I had to walk was really uncomfortable. Once that drain
came out before I went home, it was a tremendous relief. A day after I was
home, the gas went up around my heart/shoulders and that felt like I had
been in a car accident or something, just very very sore, but then that
went away in about a day or two. The pain was NOTHING like I imagined it
to be. Very minimal once that drainage tube came out. Good luck with your
upcoming surgery!

i had lap RNY on 4/27. i don't want to scare you but when i awoke from
anesthesia, i thought i had made the BIGGEST mistake EVER. i was in a LOT
of pain. they started giving me dilaudid and fentanyl immediately and i
felt a little better but i was extremely nauseous. NOT everyone gets a
morphine pump either-- i had to wait 3 hours each time i wanted meds and
buzz the nurse. when i arrived home from the hospital i took 2 vicodin
every 4 hours for 2 days. by the 5th day i felt well enough to alternate
with children's tylenol and then by a week out i felt fine. the pain is
totally worth it though. i have lost 45 lbs in 3 months and feel
spectacular.

I didn't have any pain post op. I had a complication: too much swelling at
the reconnection. I couldn't keep any fluids down so my doctor kept me in
the hospital for a week. I too had asked myself why I put myself thru this
surgery but hey, my doctor took good care of me and now I'm good to go.
