Question:
Soy or Whey Protein
I have been having problems getting my protein in and I finally found a drink that doesn't gag me. It is made with whey protein. I don't know anything about whey protein all I ever hear about is soy. Which is better for us and what is the difference just so I know. Thank You. — Nicole S. (posted on January 5, 2007)

What is the name of the protein shake you found? I like Extreme Smoothies
ready to drink by VHT. 35 grams in an 11oz. can and 170 calories. I order
them from vitacost.com for $1.89 each. I like the strawberry and praline
the best. I have not heard of soy protein shakes most everyone takes whey
protein.

Everything I have heard from doing my research before surgery was that we
were to use whey protein. if you go to
www.weider.ca/articles/proteinsources.htm it gives a great explanation of
several different proteins and what the benefits are for each one.

I have a thyroid condition and need to stay away from soy because it
interferes with my medication. I therefore make sure my drinks contain
whey protein, not soy. I understand there is slight difference in how your
body processes whey vs. soy, but I am not sure if one is any better than
the other. I tend to think that either is ok as long as you don't have
allergies or medical conditions that would prohibit one or the other.

Whey is more bioavailable than soy, certainly tastes better and mixes
easily in water. If you prefer soy, please check with your gyn before
using it regularly, ok? I started on soy, way back in the dark ages
(1994), and it was gritty and nasty. I know they've improved, but nothing
close to the mixability and smooth textures of whey. I like that whey is
at the top of the BV list, where soy is about #10.

I think Whey is better for us. Try www.bariatriceating.com. I don't like
everything she sells but she has a sample pack that I tried and I found 4
that I use now; Matrix 5.0, Nectar Strawberry Kiwi and Fuzzy naval,
AnyWhey. I mix the first three with water, the first one I do warm (mix in
cold and add warm). AnyWhey I use for warm teas and to cook with.
