Weight loss from any wt loss surgery depends on how well you follow the
protocol set by your surgeon. During the first few months, wt loss is
pretty consistent, even if you fail to follow instructions 100%. It's when
you get out 6 months or more, that the protocol ends up setting the
"routine" for continued wt loss. Not following protocol, like
getting in protein levels, vitamins, calcium citrate, fluids--that may end
up causing issues that may result in re-admission to the hospital. Total wt
loss on a long term basis depends on YOU and your daily routine. Reverting
to old habits may result in wt gain. RNY and lapband is covered by the
majority of insurance companies, but the sleeve may not. DAVE

I am 5'2 1/2 and weighed about 247 before I had my gast. sleeve surgery on
11/06/07. I have lost about 82 lbs. I just had my 1 yr. checkup and was
told by the PA that they don't yet have any stats. of loss in gast. sleeve
patients. She also said they give it 18 months. At my 6 month appt. I
told my nut. that I was only getting 600 to 800 cals. a day. She had me
increase to 1200 by adding reg. cheese, reg. eggs, p.butter and nuts.
Well, nuts are a dangerous food for me! If
a little is good then a lot must be better right?!? I haven't had a loss
for several weeks, no gain either thank God. I also stopped keeping my
food diary at that time. My advice to you is follow everything they tell
you and always keep that food diary going. I got mine back out and dropped
the p.butter & nuts. I think the gast. sleeve has some advantages over
the RNY. I think the loss is more gradual and you retain more of your
nutrition. I hear people talking about the "unhealthy" look of
the RNY patients after their loss but I am told I don't have that look. I
think it is because of the nutrition issue and the more gradual loss. I
feel wonderful and am very happpy. I am off blood Pressure meds &
cholestrol meds. I think you will do great. How much you loose isn't as
important as how healthy you get and how happy and well you feel. Best
wishes. Betty

I am 5'4" and weighed 268 before surgery. I had the sleeve on March 31
and have lost 105lbs. I think it is a wonderful surgery but, as with any
WLS, you do have to make a commitment to follow the eating plan. The sleeve
is a great tool that allows us the ability to follow that plan.

The question is, how much do you WANT to lose? The Gastric Sleeve can get
you there as long as you follow all the rules. The people who have a
problem with the sleeve are USUALLY the people who don't follow the rules.
You will find SOME people who will have difficulty no matter WHAT procedure
they use, but the are a minority. Follow your nutritionist's advice. Do
your protein and exercises. The Gastric Sleeve is almost exactly as
effective as the Gastric Bypass without all of the nasty side effects.
There is no malabsorption issue to deal with, and you do not have to deal
with the other issues of dumping and excess gas in the intestinal tract.
That doesn't include the monthly blood work and special vitamins, and
everything else that comes with the Gastric Bypass. Sleeve patients do not
have to take special vitamins to make up for malabsorption. We do not have
to have blood work done on a regular basis to ensure that we are getting
the correct nutrition because our intestinal tract is intact. We gain full
sustenance from what small amount of food we DO eat. If we take ANY
vitamins at all, they are usually just the regular vitamins that can be
purchased over the counter at any drug store. I am a Vertical Sleeve
patient, and I lost 105 pounds in 6 months until my endocrinologist changed
my prescription for my thyroid medication. Unfortunately, he dropped the
dose for my medication too low, and it was three months before I was
scheduled to be tested to check the levels of that medication in my blood.
I stopped losing weight when the medication level was dropped. I have
recently been tested for the same thyroid medication, and it has been found
to be too low. My medication has been increased, and I am once again
starting to lose weight, but not as fast as I was before. My thyroid
medication has a great impact on metabolism. It seems to have had a great
impact on my weight loss. For MOST people, this should NOT be an issue.
Since I have LOST the 105 pounds in 6 months (now 107 pounds in 8 months),
I have DROPPED ALL of my diabetes medications and about HALF of my OTHER
medications. My arthritis does not bother me NEAR as much as it used to.
Neither does my fibro-myalgia. I still suffer from severe migraines, but
they are not as severe as they USED to be. It used to be that I would not
be able to get out of bed in the autumn of the year. This year, I have
been able to function fairly well, even on the cooler days. I still get
the migraines, but they come LATER in the day and not early in the morning
like they used to. Once my thyroid medication is back on track, I will get
back on trac with my weight loss and lose the 30 or so pounds that I have
left to lose. I look forward to doing so! I wish YOU the best. If you

more about the different options available, check out my blog on my

Archives. I hope this helps. Hugh

I got the GVS on 3 Nov 08 In the past month I have lost 35 lbs. But not
all Insurences will cover the sleeve yet. I got it because I only have One
Kidney. So You may not get the sleeve just yet, unless the doc thinks that
is best for you with extra sercumstanses. Stay in touch and I will keep
you inform on may weight loss.
