Have you told your surgeon what you're thinking? We can all tell you what
we've had done and whether we think we made the right choice for ourselves,
but we're all so different ... And what's best for me may not be best for
you. Whichever procedure you choose, I wish you the best of luck! Keep us
posted!

Kimberly-
Certainly you should look into the DS surgery as an option. I chose the DS
surgery in 2005. I lost approximately 175lbs and through diet and exercise
I have kept it off. I will never, God willing, be more than 5lbs over my
desired weight again in this life. I chose that particular surgery for the
following reasons: 1) Greater chance of losing more overall weight, 2)
Greater chance of keeping weight lost off, 3) No dumping syndrome. The
drawbacks of this surgery are 1) Significant malnutrition, you must commit
to many supplements every day for the rest of your life and you must have
your blood work done every year to ensure that you are on top of your
nutritional needs and 2) flatulence (passing gas) is a greater problem with
DS but not at all unheard of with RNY and 3) you must get a surgeon with a
good DS track record. Many surgeons have done a multitude of RNYs but not
so many DS and it is imperative that you have an expert in DS. Good luck
with your decision.

Your surgeon will be able to recommend the procedure he thinks is best for
you. This is something only you and he can decide. My surgeon said I
would be a good candidate for either lap band and RNY. So I chose RNY,
because statistics show a greater loss of excess fat pounds. I wanted to
get my surgery done and get on with life, without having to have something
"adjusted" or risk the chance of slipage. Now I am not dissing
lap band, there are alot of folks who had wonderful results with it. But
you do your research and decide. Take care and best of luck in your
weight-loss journey.

I personally chose RNY over DS because I know myself and I wanted to not be
able to go back to old way of eating. I was afraid with DS that I would go
back to being able to eat anything without getting sick.
RNY has 'dumping' which mean that most, not all, losers get sick if they
eat things they shouldn't. My doctor also felt that with over 150 lbs. to
lose this was best for me.
Go with what you feel will suit your eating patterns best.

I think it is great you are taking the time to research all the options to
discuss with your doctor- I would suggest that you also research the VSG-
you will be more confident in your final decision if you know you
researched all possible surgeries- good luck!

Its a great idea to RESEARCH as much as possible. In my personal
opinion...I would have the gastric sleeve which is the 1st step of the
D.S.. The Gastric Sleeve is in fact the 1st step of the D.S. WLS. Start
with that, see how you do and how you feel and U always have to option of
going back for the second half. What I personally like about the Gastric
Sleeve is that all your insides stay where where God placed them and U get
non of the malnutrition problems as long as you keep to the rules. It is
much safer and in fact has been used in a lot of countries for a very long
time, it has been used in the U.S. for cancer and ulcer patients for
years. Good luck on your journey.

You have to do your own research sweetie. No one can help you make a life
changing decision. Just like you would not ask any of us to help you pick
out who to marry or who you should vote for or what religion you should
choose...This decison is VERY personal and it should be 100 % yours through
your own research. With that all said, I needed to lose 150 lbs...I might
have had DS if my insurance covered it...I thought the lap band was the
least invasive but later learned it is QUITE invasive and mainly meant for
lighter weights with 100 max pounds to lose. (That's my opinion based on
my own research) Many people fail with the lapband. RNY seemed to have
better results for heavier people and healed diabetes and many other
comorbidities. The success rate seemed good enough for me and my own
determination to make it work as long as I followed the rules...There were
very strict diet changes to healthier eating. DS offers you a much more
leanient diet. They eat anything...That was not for me. I wanted to eat
healthier....Not that DSers cannot choose this for themselves, but their
malabsorption issues mean THEY MUST eat a lot of food to absorb calories.
RNYers absorb all calories! Big DIFFERENCE! If you don't think you can
give up all junk food and sugar and eating hearty...DSers love love love to
eat what they want (makes me so jealous sometimes! LOL) But at the same
time, I knew I would just continue eating crap and a lot of it, if I paid
for the DS...I was more inclined to try the RNY for sugar/fat dumping and
fat malabsorption and eating healthy and smaller meals. That was what I
wanted for my whole family so we could ALL eat healthier and start more
healthier habits. DS offered me too much temptation and defeated my inner
choice to CHANGE my bad eating cycle for me and my family...I chooose
RNY...I also ran into nutrition problems because those strict rules meant I
REALLY did need to take vits...forever...They were not joking, or being
over cautious...They were SERIOUS! And it took 4 years to realise that I
had slowly become malnourished...I felt fine...and had no idea I was on the
edge of a heart attack or brain damage! Oh yeah...No idea! And I learned
bad habits that aid in gaining weight! So I have to be careful of I could
easily gain some weight back! It's a constant daily chore to watch my
weight....Not as easy as I thought it would be....but not as difficult
either. So you see, these decisions must be researched and fit for you and
your personality and what you want from the surgery you pick. What you
need to lose, you could pick anyone of them and probably be successful if
you stick to the rules that come with the surgery. You have to remember
that each surgery is a tool, not a magic cure...and each one has their pros
and cons...and NONE of them are the easy way out. You WILL have to work to
maintain your weight AND your health. Complications come with all
surgeries too. Good luck!

I had between 125-130 lb to lose also. I think you should at least research
the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), which is also one of the forums on
this board. It has been extremely successful for me with no life long
issues to deal with.
