Question:
Protein shakes

I am a little over a week out and having a really hard time with the protein shakes. I gag severely on just the taste. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of one that may taste alright to try??? All of your help is appreciated. Thanks!    — okiegirl (posted on October 13, 2007)

Beverly, Check out the ObesityHelp.com store. They have these tiny vials of protein liquid, that are fruit flavored. I plan on getting some of these on hand for after my surgery. Also, when you can have it yogurt has alot of protein. Good luck! Lesleigh

boy this is a hard subject -there are so many protein drinks out there and a lot of them are nasty.. and each person is different. when i had surgery 2 years ago i was told that everyone LOVED Isopure (able to get at GNC and other stores). I gagged on it - but others loved it. I found Muscle Milk - the one that is prepared. I find it at GNC and my local grocery stores in texas. that fruit protein in 3oz containers is a new tihng that people are raving about but i tried it and didn't like it. i beleive bariatriceating.com has a sample pack. i know they do on protein bars - i would try that... you will find good ones and bad ones. another option is to go to a health place - like smoothie factory - where they sell nutritional drinks - you can get single packets of protein powder so you can try them. then when you find one you like then you can buy the 20lb massive container. but i don't buy those i stick with the liquid mucsle milk. good luck in your search...

I had the same problem. Until I found Anywhey tasteless protein powder @ GNC (recomended by many on here). GNC is the cheapest place to get it, as the other places online etc, charge shipping and handling and then you have to wait for it to arrive, but just walk into GNC and buy it and you have it. (I am on a strict budget, so I have researched every way possible to get the cheapest) Be leary of the protein bullets, they are not the WHEY protein that we really need! They are good for occasional, but very expensive. And later on when you're further along, you can bake with this powder, and also add it to hot drinks, soups etc! Check it out! Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side!

i am very hard to please when it comes to the taste of things, but i have been using SLIM FAST LOW CARB (be sure to get low carb because it has more protein and less sugar than the high protein slim fast!) in chocolate and mixing in a scoop of 100% premium whey protein from walmart in vanilla flavor and it is really good- gives you 43g protein per shake and is only about 12oz. i tried alot of the other things prior to my surgery and they were awful so i knew they wouldn't work afterwards. i really hope this helps.... You didn't say what you are using and how you have made it up. You could be getting too much volume or too much sugar or using a Meal Replacement Powder (MRP) vs a good protein. Any of those can make you feel yucky. Any of these are what I use: 1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet). 2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken. 3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended. 4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or hand blender. Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat. I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of vit D3).

It will get better for you as weeks progress. i used the chocolate isopure from GNC. added some splenda for some sweetness. Some of the shakes you buy are too thick to start with. so the isopure is a powder and you can water it down to thickness you can handle. Sip it slowly, take your time these first few weeks.

Hi Beverly, I am just getting started with this whole thing, but my nutritionist told me NO SLIM FAST, they recommend the EAS Shakes AdvantEdge that is endorsed by Body For Life. I love those. Sam's only carries the chocolate fudge, ($28 oer case if 24) but it's my favorite anyway. They are for meal replacements though. When you can go for yogurt, go to Kroger's and buy their Carb Master brand. It's the highest in protein of any of them out there that I have found. I am diabetic, so I am used to finding the high protein foods to balace with the carbs. Good luck! I will be glad when I am on the losing side too! I am waiting for insurance approval. Hopefully by Christmas I will be asking for advise too! Katann

WE LIKE BODY FORTRESS AT WALMART, AND IT'S CHEAPER. WHAT WE DO IS MIX 8 oz. OF MILK, 2 SCOOPS OF PROTIEN, AND ONE PACK OF CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST - SUGAR FREE. OR 8 oz. OF MILK, 2 SCOOPS OF PROTIEN, AND 1 SCOOP OF NESTLE QUICK CHOCOLATE OR STRAWBERRY MIX. THIS SHAKE GIVES YOU BETWEEN 48 - 52 GRAMS OF PROTIEN, AND TASTES GOOD, BUT EACH PERSON HAS DIFFERNT TASTES, GOOD LUCK. JOHN

Hi Beverly, I am almost 8 weeks out and I really feel for you, I have had a terrible time with the protein too! I have tried the protidiet, the Unjury powder, Muscle Milk, CNP protein slam, Boost, Advantage shake, ensure shake, and isopure fruit drink. I loved the muscle milk before surgery and I tolerated it for about two weeks after, but suddenly started gagging on it! I hope that I will be able to use it again becuase I bought a bunch of it before my surgery!! I don't like jello so anything with a gelatin like base makes me sick so the protidiet and the protein slams (fruit punch) were out! I have tried every flavor of the isopure and found the blue raspberry to be the least offensive. I'll be honest with you, I don't think any of them taste good, but I can get the isopure down without being sick. The other flavors (alpine punch, apple melon, orange pineapple etc... were terrible) the grape frost isn't too bad either. The bad side of it is that it is expensive!!!! Most of my friends that are at least a few months out really like the muscle milk! Good Luck to you and hang in there!!

You probally won't ever find one that is so great you crave another lol. That being said, the least offensive one that I have found is Muscle Milk premixed shakes. They are easily found in several store chains as well as online.

The protein bullets at GNC and The Vitamin Shoppe or good. They are a little on the expensive side but if you cant handle the nasty powders like me then they would be your best bet. They come on Orange, Grape, Fruit Punch, and Blueberry. GOOD LUCK

Hi! I went to BariatricEating.com and got a sample pack of 14 protein powders for about $60. It also came with this great book 'Eating Before and After' and a cup to make shakes in that I can't live without now! Good luck. I have found about 5 proteins I like now from the pack. I mix them with milk though, not water. I'm 1 month past-op. Hope this helps!

I cannot stand anything that tastes or smells like vitamins. Trying to get all my protein in is also a real challenge. I am 2 1/2 months out and have tried to get my protein through food, but I can't seem to get that much down. I get that "one more bite will make me sick" feeling. I have to really watch the things I like - cheese, nuts, soups, etc because most are high in fat or sodium. What I found I like is what they gave me in the hospital - Boost (for Diabetics - low sugar) vanilla or strawberry. Even though I love chocolate - it does not agree with me. I don't like it plain though. I put a bottle of vanilla or strawberry boost in my blender (magic bullet) and add 2 scoops of tasteless, odorless whey protein (slight vanilla odor to me), a whole, sliced banana, 1 or 2 sweet-n-lows and crushed ice. I blend until it comes out like a smoothie. It tastes great - like a milk shake and it is very filling. It has over half of a days protein. I don't smell or taste anything that makes me gag. The good thing is that I actually look forward to it when my mind just can't seem to figure out what to eat to get my protein in.

I use Spirutein which can be bought at GNC for $35 for a 32 serving can at 14 grams of protein per serving. The strawberry tastes great but the chocolate is not as good. I buy it online from www.vitacoast.com for $23 plus $5 shipping. I also buy L-Carnitine and other liquid vitamins and supplements because the $5 shipping cover everything in that one order. I also use Wonderslim Fruit Flavored Protein drinks from www.dietdirect.com which taste good and fruity. You mix them with cold water for 12 grams per serving diet fruit drinks. Flavors: Mixed Berry, Wild berry, Cranberry Grape, Pineapple Apricot, Strawberry Kiwi, Orange, Lemonade.

There is a web site called "Vitalady.com" there you can sample what types of protein shakes you want to try. The samples are about $1.99 cents. I would reccomend Isopure protein powders. They have Dutch Chocolate, Strawberries and Cream, and Creamy Vanilla. I am on the pre-surgical diet, and I like them all. They really aren't too bad at all, and you can sample them before you buy them which is really nice.

GNC has zero carb Isopure protein drinks they has 40 grams of protein. The alpine punch and grape frost are good. Just like juice. Sometimes I add some crystal lite to make a better flavor.

I have to get in 70 grams of protein. I want to get that over as soon as possible. In my magic bullet I use the whey protein 2 scoops=47proteins...8 oz of skim milk=9protein....1 yogurt from Krogers(carb master)=12protein. If you have a Kroger near you the yogurt usually sells for 10 for $4. Also I get my whey powder there also only 12.99 Brand name Body Fortress. This helps me...also if I add vanilla yogurt, I add sugar free hot chocolate mix powder to give choc taste and add 6 more prteins to it. Good luck!!!! This usually lasts me half the day....but it works

Hey Beverly, I had the exact problem. I bought several of them before I found one I liked. Everything was god awful. I walked into GNC and told the sales rep that I'd spent so much money trying these drinks and he asked me "Do you like hershey bars". I said yeah and he promised me with money back guarantee that I'd be please with the drink he was recommending. It was 50.00 and I was a little hesitant to spend that much and not know what it tasted like. He promised me I could return it with no questions asked. Beverly I was so excited and amazed it actually tasted like a melted hershey just as he said. Its called Maximum Protein and has 22 grams of protein. I've only tried chocolate and it had no taste like the nasty whey products. I actually Love it and looking forward to continue to drinking them even when I don't have too.
