Question:
Amount of intestine bypassed?
I am scheduled for surgery (open rny) on the 17th of this month. I had my pre-op with my sergeon again and he said that they were going to be bypassing 6 feet of intestine instead of the normal 3 feet. The reason I was given is because of my high BMI, (70) doing so will increase the malabsorbtion and there will be longer weight loss time and more total weight loss. Has anyone had this done or heard of this?? Thanks so much — Blonde_Sanchez (posted on September 12, 2007)

My doctor bypassed 75 inches of intestine in my bypass. I weighed 299 at
the time of surgery. I heard if you bypass anymore then 75 inches a lot of
insurance companies will not pay for the surgery. Good luck on your
surgary.

My BMI was 52 and My DR took 5 feet out, I am 2 1/2 years out and still
loosing, I think it all depends on your health and the ability of your
doctor-

Sounds like you will have a distal RnY. The shorter amount is a proximal
RnY. Both normal. It depends on BMI, age, etc.

he/she's the expert. You have SO much to look forward to!!! You'll see :O)
