I was told we needed at least 70-80 grams of protein each day. Otherwise I
don't know what to tell you. I'm told it's temporary, so hang in there!
Good luck

Make sure your vitamins have Biotin in it, if not you can buy a bottle at
the health food store. I was really have a hard time with my hair, and it
is better now that I take the Biotin. Good luck

My doc told me to expect 3-4 mo out....but that it would return. I think
anytime you have major surgery, it takes that long for it to affect your
hair. cj

80 gm of protein daily is the minimum. You should strive for 80-100/daily.
Also make sure you're not eating too many protein gms at once. The body
can only absorb around 30gms per hour. Hope this helps.

Hairloss is normal especially when the body is stressed as much as it is
with the lack of intake of food and your freaking out over it. Calm down
and relax, NO STRESS! Then you will see it all change back to normal when
you feel "normal" and your body gets used to this. You've lost
an entire person in just 4 months, that is stressful to your body. Be
happy and add the hairloss to the weightloss if you need a brighter side
to get you going in a positive direction. hahaha Don't worry be happy that
you're such a LOSER! LOL

Hi Roxanne, thanks for your question. Here is the thing about hair loss.
Once the damage is done, it can take up to 3 months for the hair to
actually fall out. Some might start right away, but it can continue for
some time until your build your health up again. Add that to the stress of
over 20pounds each month loss (congrats), equals your body is under a lot
of stress. You may be doing all the right stuff, but your body is still
suffering. It is something you have to be patient with and work with. I
am 3 years out, and still get a hand full of hair when I wash it. I only
wash it 3 times a week because of this. You need to monitor your stress,
and get rest when you can. It is more than just protein and vitamins, you
need to understand that your body has to really suffer to lose all this
weight, and it just takes it's toll. Here is my suggestion: Celebrate the
88 pounds lost and enjoy it! You can't stop hair loss, and worry only
makes it worse. Maybe buy a wig if you have a real problem with it, but
celebrate what success you have and relax. It will help you in the end.
Some things we can't do anything about, but cover it up(the hair). Take
care, and congrats on such a great weight loss in such a short time! Take
care. Patricia P.

I hate to say it but there isn't a lot you can do with the hair loss. Some
people have said biotin has helped but it doesn't stop it completely. My
hair loss started at 3 months out and ended at about 7 months out. I hated
it! But it does grow back.
And as for your protein, you need to eat the amount of protein your
nutritionist/surgeon suggested you eat. If they said 55-60 grams, then
stick with what THEY said. Mine said the same thing and I'm doing great -
labs are great, everything looks good.
CONGRATS ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS TOO!! Way to go!

One more thing that may help with the hair loss is the Nioxin hair care
product line. I am 3 weeks out, and have been using it. Nioxin was created
for cancer patients going through Chemo. JCPennys carries it.

i'm sorry to hear about your stress. i'm almost done with my preop stuff
and plan to have surgery in aug or sept. my hair falls out alot now- i have
PCOS and am told that's the reason. i have done alot of research on the
hair loss issue, because i have been worried that after surgery i might be
in serious trouble. the main things i have found is biotin and silica, i
plan to start taking them immediately after surgery and hopefully at 3 or 4
mo when the hair loss starts it will be minimal. other than that just know
it's temporary and will grow back. congrats on the wt loss. holly

I was told the hair loss would start at about 4 months out and would last
about two months. I am at nine months and it has slowed down but is still
falling out. I am seeing some regrowth though. Don't stop your vitamins but
just understand that you are not doing anything wrong. It is just your body
trying to readjust.

Hi! I was going to post the same ? so I thought I'd ask you b4 I did....Is
your hair just falling out more than normal or is it like mine and falling
out in clumps?!...I wasn't really concerned until this past weekend...I try
to only wash my hair every other day bcuz when I do my hands are COVERED in
hair and it's hard for me to wash n rinse bcuz of it...what would take a
month to normally shed now happens that way every day and twice that much
in the shower...I could clean my hair brush out 3 times a day with huge
handfuls of hair...u know the movies where people put hair removal in
peoples shampoo for pranks and it shows all their hair falling
out!?!...that me!!!....I'm just waiting to wake up one morning and be
truely bald!....I feel like I'm being shallow but I'm kinda freaking out
now!

Hi I'm 2 years out and I can remember my hair loss. It started at 3 month
until aboput 7 months. I was getting all my protien 70 gram plus grams a
day. I was also taking 3000 mcg of boitin a day and using Nioxin shampoo on
my hair. I have naturally curly hair(still do) and it was below my
shoulders but I realized that I was adding stress to my hair every time I
had it pulled back in a ponytail,so I cut it to just above my shoulders and
it helped with my stress about losing it. It seemed to help because at 7
months it stopped falling out. But let me warn you....IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN
if you are not carefully monitoring your daily protien intake! It happened
to me at 12 months I messed up for a few weeks by not getting in enough
protien everyday. Once I corrected this it stopped.

yep... I am 5 months post-op and my hair started falling out about 2 months
ago and just keeps falling out. It's all over my bathroom every day and all
over my pillow when I wake up. It freaks me out a bit, I was using Nioxin
but it didn't seem to help. My scalp is also very dry now for some reason.
Here's what I did: I got my hair cut to a "short and edgy" style
that's very texturized. This way I'm able to kind of make my hair look
fuller. Twice a week I put baby oil on my scalp and let it sit in for about
an hour and then massage my scalp vigorously while washing it. It seems to
be helping, mabye the dry scalp being better just gives the illusion that
my hair looks better, but I don't really know. All I know is that, while
very scary, losing hair is a small price to pay for being at a healthier
weight and better quality of life. We knew there were prices we would have
to pay--- and hopefully it's only temporary! :) Best of luck to you and
in my head I always think that if it gets too bad I will just get a wig.
