I was told that Ibuprofin is out forever, as well as any aspirin product. I would let your doctor know that and see about getting tylonol perscribed instead.

Same here--Only tylenol products. I always inform doctors of this and they give me acetametaphin products, like tylenol, vicodin, etc.

My surgeon said no NSAIDs for the first 6 months to a year. But, he also said that after that point occassional or lower dose use is not prohibited. It was just important not to take them in high doses daily or high doses on a regular basis since they can damage the pouch with repeated use.

It all depends on the doctor and their protocol as you have seen from the other posters. So, I will throw my hat in the ring and tell you what I can do. I can have Advil or another NSAID but only occasionally. I can take a low dose of baby aspirin (81mg) daily if I take it with food. So, you really need to ask your doctor.

My doctor says the same thing. Take them occasionally, but not all the time. You might want to protect your pouch with OTC Prilisac. After the pain from the surgery, go back to no Nsaids. Judy

HERE'S AN EXAMPLE OF EXTREME EXPERIENCE with ibuprofen post-operatively. I have had neurogenic pain for several years, and it has ONLY responded to a combination of exercise, ibuprofen and gabapentin. I discussed my dependence on large doses of ibuprofen with my surgeon before surgery, and he said to try it, but be sure to take my "usual antacid" with it. I did not have gastric reflux or any acid problems pre-op, but part of my surgeon's usual protocol is to put every patient on a protein pump inhibitor called PARIET for the first three months post op. This drug is normally prescribed for people with bad acid reflux, as it promotes healing. Well, I did just fine with taking up to 2400mg of ibuprofen a day, as well as drinking coffee, until the three months was over and I stoppedtaking Pariet. Within two days, I was in so much constant pain that I didn't dare take ibuprofen- I was scared to consume anything that didn't seem completely benign. Fortunately, it was only a few days later that I had a follow-up with my surgeon, and he immediately reinstated my Pariet Rx. I have been doing fine since then, although I will always be on the lookout for coffee-ground looking stuff in my BMs, or signs of low BP (faintness) that might indicate bleeding in my pouch. I am working very hard to recover from my nerve injury, so I don't have to take ibuprofen for years and years, So far, so good. :)
